NEW YORK -- NRG Energy Inc. said Friday the Nuclear Regulatory Commission has accepted the application for two new nuclear units in Texas. The NRC has docketed the Combined Construction and Operating License Application to build and operate two new nuclear units at the South Texas Project nuclear power station site filed by NRG Energy, Inc., San Antonio's CPS Energy and South Texas Project Nuclear Operating Company. It's the first to be filed with the NRC in 29 years, the company said. "The acceptance review confirms that the application...is technically complete and sufficiently addresses all necessary subject areas," NRG said. NRG said it would anticipate receiving its license approval in time to begin construction in 2010 and bring STP units 3 and 4 online in 2014 and 2015, respectively.

I am glad too.

Anyone know how the construction and permitting of Yukka Mountain is doing? Sure would be nice if we had a perminent storage location for the wastes.

Best Yucca Mountain quote ever, from Sr. Veep at Nuclear:

"God created the Heavens and Earth in six days, and on the seventh day, He rested. On the eighth day, He woke up and realized He had forgotten to create a place to store spent nuclear fuel, so he created Yucca Mountain."

I've heard that as long as Harry Reid is Senator from Nevada, forget Yucca Mountain, no matter how perfect it is for containing nuclear byproduct.

(Do you like that subtle shift in language? Let's all have a secret pact to call it "nuclear byproduct" from now on, since in 100 years we'll figure out a way to recycle nuclear waste. Maybe we'll make coffee cups or sugar crystals or cold fusion tanks out of it. Who knows?)
