can someone explain this to me.

Why can't I do this: P = (50)^2 / (2)(5) + (28.28)^2 / (2)(5)

that is : P = (Vrms)^2 / R

Must add the voltages as phasors; 50@45 deg plus 28.28, the magnitude of that vector sum is 72.8 volts. Now use your formula.
