There was definitely a guy in the Cleveland session who looked to be >90, I hope he passed, I'd feel badly for him otherwise

There's nothing wrong with kits or extract brewing. Nearly everyone starts that way. Have fun and try to keep that fermenter at a nice steady temp in the upper 60's
