Hello,

Lateral Pressure on formwork is addressed in both ASCE 37-02 and ACI 347-04, but there are few differences in both:

- Column Forms

ASCE states maximum limit of 3000 psf, however ACI has no upper limit.

-Wall Forms

ASCE doesn't consider the placement height, but ACI use 14' as one of the applied conditions.

ASCE uses 2000 psf as maximum pressure but ACI again has no upper limit.

How can I answer such a question in the exam? hope I'm not missing something.

Thanks!

All my notes from my exam reference ACI 347, but I didn't take construction. The construction exam lists both ACI and ASCE as required references.

I'd imagine the problem statement is going to have to tell what standard you are following/designing for. The questions can not be ambiguous like this. Either that, or the problem will be such that it won't fall outside of these parameters.

I can't answer your question in regard to the exam, but I suspect the problems will be structured such that you won't run into these limits.

Practically, it's incredibly difficult to get pour pressures that high in the real world (between the mix and pour rate). And we like to think exam questions mirror real world problems.

If I remember correctly, the problems will refer to the specification to be used for answering the problem, for example "according to ACI-347, blah blah blah..."

As for the pressure calculations and limits, the problems are setup to push you towards the ACI formulas.
