You know you are a helicopter parent when the police get called to the baseball game when you assault the umpire over the strike zone of an 8yr old.  

Happened last night.  The cops were called over when the visiting team on the other field had a parent start verbally assaulting the umpire (high schooler) over the strike zone of their 8yr old kid.  The visiting team had to forfeit during the top of the first inning because of it.

Try cricket, all you gotta do is hit the wicket, its a clear out. no need to worry about zones

Since I was usually coaching I mainly remember the parents yelling at me

But I don't remember that many times parents in our area were verbally abusive to the umpires. It was more when they would catch you in the parking lot after practice and try to get you to make their kid the pitcher or 1st basement next game...

Our league rules punish the kids for when parents make those requests.  Parents ask/push for their kids to play more or a specific position and the kids will be benched for the next game.

A few months ago I got an email from a kid who I let pitch an inning in a game when he was 9, he is now 16.  He wasn't ready to pitch but I was always willing to let a kid play any position for an inning if the KID asked me.  He had just gotten his Eagle Scout and was in my cub scout den, but he emailed to let me know he got his eagle rank and added in oh yeah " Thanks for letting me pitch that game!"

So the kids usually don't remember all the parental bickering. unless they are the chosen super star (by their parents) and get nagged to death after every game..

Both my kids played baseball.  My older son was an umpire for little league when he was 14/15 yo.  The league told him he was the authority on the field and not to be intimidated by adults.  He actually made parents leave the park for questioning his calls/harassing him a couple of times.  The parents deserved it and the league and coaches always backed him up.  the league was hard pressed to find umpires so they diligently protected them from the idiot parents.

^always good to see that!!  That's how our town works too.  Other towns we have played however use a parent or adult.

minisnick's team had a big win yesterday 12-3.  They could have gotten a couple more runs but they ran through the lineup completely during 2-3 innings without reaching 3 outs and had to stop per league rules.   That makes 3 wins in a row and a complete improvement from the first 4 games of the season.  It finally clicked.  3-4-1 is the current team stat.  Minisnick got a hit on every time at bat, but he is in a point in the line up that he gets more RBIs than scores by him.

I was an ump all throughout Jr high and high school and had numerous parents (and coaches) scream and shout at me, but like the MA_PE's son, I had the league backing me.  On more than one occasion I stopped play until an unruly parent left the stands and waited in the car. I was never assaulted but when I was 15/16 I did have a JuCo offensive lineman come up to me after a game and start shouting at me and threatening me, luckily there was someone there to escort him out after I ejected him. Had a blast umpiring all those years though and it was great pay for someone my age.
