Gamabank=109pcf

Gammaloose=91pcf

GammaCompacted=121pcf

Calculate the % swell of the soils?

Calculate the % shrinkage of the soils?

Calculate the swell factor of the soils?

Calculate the shrinkage factor of the soils?

:congrats:

please provide some hints, I read CERM and I couldn't find direct solutions. Thanks.

Swell is the material that will expand. So, if you have loose material

in the embankment it will be more likely to swell.

Vise verse for the shrink material.

what is used to measure Swell? Volumn change? Same for Shrinkage, volumn change?

I don't think CERM talks enough on this topic.

Thanks. :violin:

Yes, this is all about the volume change.

Example:

2 tons= 1yd^3 embankment=1.2yd^3 loose material =0.8yd^3 compacted.

Exacted weight, different volumes.

This is better, but Shinkage and Swell are relative quantities. Are there any formulas for these ? Thanks

Ok here is the solution...

%swell=(Gammabank-Gammaloose)/Gammaloose=(109-91)/91=0.197=20%

%Shrinkage=(GammaCompacted-GammaBank)/GammaCompacted

=0.099=10%

Swell Factor=Gammaloose/Gammabank=91/109=0.83

Shrinkage Factor=GammaCompacted/Gammabank=121/109=1.1

Famous quote

"Do women know about shrinkage?"

:lie: What do you mean, like laundry?

Thanks for the solution. I will just print it out and put in the binder. By the way, what is Gammabank?

Was it like a frightened turtle?

Thanks guys, I think relaxing is the most important thing to do besides organizing and familiaring masterials.

But how can I relax when tension is the only thing holding me together????
