Looking for some cost saving measures. Want to buy some old MERM and ASHRAE handbooks to save money. I wonder if they are good for the current exams. Say 7th edition of MERM and 200x ASHRAE handbooks.

Thanks!

Would not recommend 7th edition of the MERM. There has been quite a few changes between that edition and the current. I would strongly recommend purchasing the current edition. No comment on ASHRAE stds.

DO YOU WANT TO FAIL?!?...I probably say you're good with older ASHRAE but 7th edition might be a little too old

The 11th retails for $120 and the 13th (which is recognized to be vastly updated compared to the 12th edition) retails for $205. Personally I would just eat the cost and get the 13th but to each his own.

What are the updates between the 12th and 13th? Are these updates necessary for a MD pm session?

Here are the listed updates:

  • 36 chapters with new material, and 46 chapters with revisions to existing material

300 new equations, and 128 updated equations
27 new tables, and 31 updated tables
7 new examples, and 34 updated examples
10 new appendices, and 27 updated appendices
35 new figures, and 28 updated figures
1,094 new index entries, and 108 updated index entries
The 12th edition was particularly sparse with HVAC material which is supposed to be rectified in the 13th. The MD section in the 12th was substantial. I doubt there's anything added to the 13th that would enhance that section.

It's not the size of your MERM that matters.

But the motion of your pencil...

You ME guys need to buy like 2 books, and come in carrying a suitcase, unlike us in civil who come in with hand trucks :)

Buy the current editions.

Is there a certain edition of ASHRAE on the NCEES list? Do not show up with an old edition of a required standard.
