I am a civil engineer licensed in multiple states. I am looking into obtaining my license in CA.

I just want to verify that I need to take both the seismic and surveying exams and not just the seismic.

Also, for these exams, I see the exams are multiple choice online administered by prometric. Looking at the prometric site, it looks like these are given outside of CA (I am in NY). Does CA allow to take at various times in the year or are they only twice a year like the NCEES exams?

thanks,

Mike

You will want to take both the seismic and surveying exams. But, as you said, they can be taken at the nearest testing center.

In my experience, you could schedule the tests at any time within about a two-week window surrounding the 8-hr test date.

rinconmike,

Currently the California Civil Seismic Principles and Engineering Surveying exams are only administered through approved Prometric CBT centers across North America and only offered twice a year (Spring and Fall).

You would need to submit your application by the final filing date and once your application is approved, the Board will include your name in the approved list provided to Prometric so scheduling can begin.

I would suggest that you review the current schedule at: http://www.bpelsg.ca.gov/applicants/exam_schedule.shtml

Also, feel free to contact the appropriate Evaluator assigned by first letter of last name if you have any questions:

Thank you for the responses. Once I submit an application and approved to take the tests, is there a time frame that the test must be completed in?

thanks,

Mike

Mike, from what an evaluator told my co-worker, you need to take at least one of the exams every 2 years before your application is discarded and you have to re-apply. Maybe CAP can confirm this.

After applying, any inactivity for 24 months will initiate an abandoned application which is subject to shred and the process would begin again.
