Didn't know if anyone had seen this yet but I thought it was very interesting that Boeing has decided to locate a plant for assembling the 787 Dreamliner down here in North Chucktown.

Boeing has said a lot of this had to do with the fact that South Carolina is not heavily unionized. In fact the workers at Vought (a company that Boeing bought back in August and builds fuselage pieces for the Dreamliner) recently voted to disband the union here. In addition, the Machinists Union in Washington wouldn't agree to a 10 year no strike clause. Looks like Boeing told them to stick it where the sun don't shine.

Anyway, we could use some good news down here.

In addition, Maersk (the shipping giant account for about 40% of the container volume) had threatened to pull its operations out of the port and they decided to stay as of this week.

Great news for SC! Looks like the Machinist Union has once again shot themselves in the foot.

I was recently at a lecture where the key note speaker was talking about the business/organizational models for different companies. He illustrated how 'over compensation' by companies could damage your organization. He offered up the example of UAW - years past the pay/benefits/retirement were quite enviable. Today, not only has the membership be driven down to a mere shadow of it's former self but that nobody (former or current) members of the UAW can not have much certainty about how well things will fare for them in the future.

The pendulum is swinging ... and anyone on the wrong side of it will be left behind, unionized or not.

Remember this: South Carolina is a right to work state. This does not mean that unions are illegal; they just are more accountabel to their membership. If you go down to the ports then you'll find out that all of the longshoremen are unionized and do very well for themselves. However, the ILA can not legally force you to pay them dues in South Carolina; granted they have other means and methods to encourage it but it is not a condition of employment. When workers are permitted to hold their representation accountable to them through the ballot box and the paycheck, then that is when workers will get the best representation in my opinion. The State of South Carolina refuses to guarantee revenue streams for the AFL-CIO, UAW, etc. and good for them. These manufacturing jobs better the standard of living for all South Carolinians through fair and resonable regulation. Hooray for Boeing! They have chosen wisely.

Looks like there might be another aircraft line coming to the Charleston plant!

SEATTLE — Boeing Co. chairman and chief executive Jim McNerney jolted listeners on a morning conference call Wednesday when he said the planned revamp of the 737 single-aisle jet with a new engine won’t necessarily be built in Renton, Wash., or in the state’s Puget Sound region.
McNerney implied that the work could come to South Carolina, where the company recently opened a 787 Dreamliner plant in North Charleston.

Whether Charleston might get the work, he said, “would depend as we studied it how competitive they are as compared to Renton or compared to another site.”
