Given:

A direct shear test results for sand as follow:

Normal force= 40

Shear resisting force =28

void e=0.49

machine dimensions =2x2x1.6

What is the phi angle?

A) 25

B ) 55

C) 45

D) 35

that's an AM question???? AAAARGH!

I'm SO not prepared then.....I can't even find that formula in the Lindeburg book!

It's a simplification of Equation 35.43 in CERM 8th Edition.

Don't freak out !!

Just break the problem down as follows:

  • What is it - Shear Test
  • Key Parameters - Normal, Shear force
  • What equations might fit - Eqn 35.43
  • What doesn't fit/what don't you have - Cohesion value: c
  • What can be assumed or derived - sample is sand, therefore c = 0
