    STEEL BEAM DESIGN AND BRACING

Last year there was an extended thread on steel beam design, more particularly Table 3-10, Lb etc etc. (forget that digression on Table 3-6). The main question was what constitutes Lb, whether a steel decking would meet the requirements of continuous bracing and satisfy requirements of Appendix...

    SMF TABLE 4-2

I was looking at the SMF Table 4-2 in the 1st and 2nd edition. The values for Pu max are lower in the 2nd edition. Was there a change to seismic compactness? Is that the reason?

    RETAINING WALLS

This is in relation to Andy Lin's post on his site. It says Bearing pressure and other service related design aspects are typically done with un-factored loads under LRFD. I am not clear on the part on unfactored loads under LRFD. Isn't LRFD itself based on using factored loads as the Load...

    AISC DESIGN GUIDES

Is the using and referencing of AISC Design Guides fair game in the SE exam? Some of the equations are not in the Specifications.

    SPECIFICATIONS

Any thoughts on this? The exam specs contain many i.e. and e.g. after some items, e.g. the following under Vertical - Wood. Beams (i.e., sawn, glued laminated, structural composite/engineered) Connections (e.g., bolted, nailed, screwed) Does it mean under composite/engineered beams it can be...

    CITING REFERNCES

How critical is citing code equations, tables etc? If the equations are written down correctly, but code equation numbers are not given alongside, would it be a material omission? I can see a section number being important if explaining something but any opinions on equations?

AM DEPTH ; PM BREADTH - GOOD OR BAD IDEA?

Will it help if NCEES would switch the AM and PM modules to Depth in the morning and Breadth in the afternoon? Just to get a feel for the feeling among those who have  taken the exam.

    STEEL MANUAL - TABLE 3-10

Selecting beams using Table 3-10 requires accounting for the weight of the beam. Cb is 1.0. Simply supported beams, easy enough to take off the moment due to self weight of the beam. But if we are doing a continuous beam, and the maximum moment   includes beam’s self weight how does one deal...

    WHAT IS ALLOWED DURING EXAM

Examinees understand that they are allowed to lower masks to eat or drink for brief moments as defined by the proctors and that proctors will issue a warning to examinees before they are dismissed.   Taken from NCEES COVID do’s and don’ts. Did I read in some post here that even water is not...

PM PROBLEMS - ARE ALL 4 GRADED BY ONE & THE SAME GRADER?

Are solutions to all 4 afternoon problems submitted by a given candidate graded by one/same grader or are they broken up and assigned to different graders depending on their expertise on the problem topic and then reassembled? They conduct workshops for the graders after an exam is administered...

Verticals Exam - Incidental Lateral Loads

I believe wind loads are part of the scope of the verticals exam. If so, and due to high wind loads shear walls or diaphragms are required, am I to bring SDPWS to the exam let alone study that? Or, are incidental lateral loads excluding the need to use SDPWS?

COVID-19 - Candidates and Exam Hall

Any thoughts on COVID-19 safety during exam? I know NCEES is doing what they can and have some protocols in place. But exams are not administered directly by NCEES. They are done through the State Boards or are they again through private contractors? I do not know. Only thing is how early one...

    IBC or ASCE

If a problem involves common topics in IBC vis-a-vis ASCE can either be used if the problem mentions one, but does not exclude the other? e.g. Wind Loads - Alternate Heights Method in IBC.
