If you buy the Kaplan stuff, call them first. When I first started studying, I called them to see if they offered any classes (which they obviously didn't), but they gave me a promo code for 50%! off any engineering review items I bought from them.
One of the guys that took the PE with me used an older edition of MERM and was fine. You just have to know where everything is in which ever book you're going to use.
Depending on the nature of the problem, I guess you could see it in either. Generally speaking, airflow through ductwork and/or powered by fans is a a fluids problem, but it is also specific to the HVAC field.
2 quick things. Definitely work the NCEES sample exam. I'd work it early in your process and then work it right before once you've covered everything. Also, work through the difficult Lindenburgh exam that comes with MERM and take it with you. I had a problem on the test that was almost...
I don't have these books anymore because I gave them to a friend who's studying for the October exam....otherwise, I'd try and help.
If you signed up for the passing zone, these are good questions to post on the forum. They have advisers who are paid to read and answer your questions...
I'm guessing you've figured out whether you're going to take the exam by now. I agree with most people on here. Get the NCEES sample test for sure. The one that comes with MERM and the practice problems book are not representative of what you'll find on the exam. Testmasters offers a course...
When studying econ in MERM, remember that it gets complicated very quickly. The only stuff that I decided to cover was how to convert present value, future value, annual cost back and forth using Appendix 69.
bph, Can you recommend some books for the Machine design depth section? One of my good friends is starting to study for that depth section for the October exam. I took the HVAC depth, so I was unsure about what to tell him to take for his section.
4 months before taking the exam in April '09, my boss said that he would give me a 7% raise for passing. Although we hit tough times between then and now at my smaller commercial HVAC contractor, he congratulated me on passing and said he would stay true to his word and give me the raise he...
From what I can remember, the only times that I used the ASHRAE books were...I think when I used the refrigerant tables in the Fundamentals book, and the heat capacity of various meats in the Refrigeration book. I never tabbed them, but I used the index anytime I found something that I didn't...
I did about 300-350 hours of studying total. I read the chapters in the order that the 14 week study schedule had them, but I skimmed them and did it in about 9-10 weeks. Then I pretty much just worked the NCEES 2008 sample test, the 6 minute solutions for HVAC&R, and then did the...
I was feeling pretty bad about the Lindenburgh exam by the time I finished it, but I had taken the NCEES 08 sample exam first and I knew it was more realistic. I didn't take any of the depth sections on any review book other than the HVAC&R depth sections. I used the Lindenburgh exam as...
I took the HVAC&R section in April and passed. I have worked through all the NCEES sample test problems, 6 min solutions for HVAC&R, and Lindenburg Sample test if there's anything I can help anyone with, let know. I have a friend that is about to sign up for engineerboards and I'll...
Thanks. I took the HVAC depth too, and carried all of the ASHRAE books, MERM, Mark's, and a Trane HVAC manual. I used MERM, and 2 of the ASHRAE books and that's it, but if Ihad to take it again, I'd bring everything the same.
I'm glad they're offering this. They had stopped for some time. I hope that this is succesfull and they continue to offer these courses every year. It's ridiculous that no school in the state of SC would offer review courses....especially Clemson where the NCEES is located.
Thanks. I gave him my copy of MERM, but that's really all he has. I'm thinking: what specific references for the Mechanical Systems and Materials afternoon section are helpful.? I took the HVAC&R in April and Passed. Here's what I did. I skimmed MERM, took the NCEES sample exam, worked...
I have a buddy takin the Mechanical Systems and materials afternoon section for the Mechanical PE. Can anyone suggest what books are usefull for this exam? I took the HVAC afternoon section and the ASHRAE books were usefull to me, but obviously won't do him any good.
Any advice will be...
