    PE Civil Geotech 2015

Hi, I agree you should read the NCEES link it is a little different then when I sat for the exam in 2010. References to LFRD, ASCE7, weren't in the 2010 version, the new one is more detailed. I would suggest 6 minute solutions for geotech also. The questions are more complicated but it is...

Suggestion for how to carry in books?

Hi, You can get a Mobile Folding Cart with Lid for about $25 at Office depot or Office Max. Someone on this site suggested it. It is collapsible and expands to 16"H x 18"W x 15"D and has a handle to wheel it around. I filled the cart up with books and loaded two book bags on top of the cart...

    Writing in reference books

I think they are okay if they are in ink, no pencil marks. That was what it was when I took the exam, you should check with your state board. I made lot notes and references in the CERM, especially fixing errors from errata. Good luck.

How Much did you make at your first job?

My first legal job was making minimum wage of $2/hr working in the university cafeteria, before I dropped out. Two years later I was really in the chips making $2.65 at gas station That was back when they pumped gas and fixed cars. Then the minimum wage went to $2.65/hr and I was minimum...

    Question on Passing Score

I like to think hen I passed I got 70+/80 right, all they said was passed on the letter, I will never know for sure. Anyway if the 98stats.pdf is correct I now know I got at least 70% right on the EIT in 1998, thanks.

    Geotechnical PM Experiences

Yes you will have redundant data on many questons, you will have to careful read them to determine what data is relevant for that question. That is the fun part, right? :)

calculating capacity of hammer driven piles

Hi, The hint was to use the dynamic driving data. This is calculating the the actual capacity developed on site. The geotechnical data I beleive is used to determine wheter or not piles should be used. In my limited experience the design engineer determined a number of blows required per foot...

bridge is to be installed at 4% grade

Hi, A 16' x 40' portable steel bridge was purchased with concrete sills, and originally going to be installed level. The plan now is to installed at a 4% grade. Anybody have any suggestions on how to mitigate for this change. I have been told it is best to have the sills sit level and if the...

Transportation problems references (geotech) afternoon session

Hi, I had a highway and transportation book by Garber, it was from 1988 or 1990, it was helpful for some of the morning questions, and for a couple of the geotech afternoon questions. Some general info on asphalt, frost heave, and subgrade reaction were useful. I found my copy at a Goodwill...

    This was my last chance

Congradulations, I was 54 years old when passed the geotech in April 2010.

    surcharge

When you have a surcharge behind a retaining wall, do you multiply it by Ka for lateral pressure? For example if you have surcharge q, of 3000lbs/ft the vertical pressure at depth 4 feet would be yz + (qa'/(a'+z)). Would the lateral pressure be Ka(yz + (qa'/(a'+z))) or Ka(yz)+ (qa'/(a'+z))?

NCEES Sample Question & Solutions: Civil - Geotechnical

Well i don't have that particular problem set, but depending what are supposed find, you may not need it. You are given the Depth of ooting (df), and If you given the dimiensions of the mat, B, & L, and some soil parameters gamma, c, φ, you can determine the the ultimate bearing capacity...

    April 2012 Pass Rates

I may have missed something, but I thought NCEES sets the passing score, which is probably most of the time 56/80 or 70% if there are more questions. The only time it would be higher or lower would be if new or newer questions were determined to ambigous or wrong. I failed the first try, and...

Licensed PE without college degree or experience -- just pass the PE exams?

In Washington state you can get your EIT with 4 yrs of qualifing engineering experience, the the PE with 4 yrs of additional engineering experience. The qualifing experience has to be engineering work typical under the supervision of a licensed Professional engineer. I don't know if I could have...

typical cut score for structural PE

I would study what you are weak on in the morning, 75% good but can obviously pick up a few more. For the afternoon you probably need to review the arts you did poorly on. Do lots more problems. Good luck

    geotech morning section

I would only expect about one of the eight to be about retaining walls, probably something about overturning or sliding maybe. You will need to know soil properties and classification, and relative density. You might get a settlement or time of settlement question, maybe a compaction or borrow...

    Shallow Foundations- Bearing Capacity

I believe you should generally use the shape and depth factors from the CERM for square and circular foundations. If other shape factors are needed they will usually be given or specified on the exam. I would be familar with the various factors. Pages 138-140 of Das' Principles of Foundation...
