    Intermediate Moment Frames, Columns, Concrete

All, Need to ask the group here a code question, in ACI 318-14, provision, 18.4.3.1 .... When discussing the appropriate load combos to use, the code mentions replacing E, with omega * E, and stipulates omega = 3. Does the code intend for us to then multiply the vertical seismic effect by 3...

    NCEES (2017) Lateral Problem 118

Well played calling a persons explanation redundant in a topic regarding redundancy. I appreciate topical puns.

AM DEPTH ; PM BREADTH - GOOD OR BAD IDEA?

One thing I’d love to see them do is either get rid of the cold formed steel completely or actually make it a more robust portion of the test and give it more questions and worth studying. Frankly I’d rather study for 2-4 cfs and have them back off bridges a bit instead bc despite using neither...

AM DEPTH ; PM BREADTH - GOOD OR BAD IDEA?

Your theory is sound but what data do you have to show that the afternoon is in fact harder? Despite the problems being hand written I find them easier bc they allow for engineering judgement and really exist in my opinion to evaluate process. I see am as a code application test. I see pm as...

AASHTO - Steel Beam Flange Thickness

    NCEES (2017) Lateral Problem 118

The way I’d look at it for this problem is that even if removing that frame doesn’t trigger the 1.3 bc of reduced capacity I believe it will be triggered bc it means your building plan is no longer regular... (Structures are regular in plan at all levels provided that the seismic...

This is a rabbit hole if I’ve ever seen one

    What codes should I use

Why would you take a test from an agency that is code based and then not use the code specifically required by said agency?? What do you think some of their questions would be?? I wouldn’t be shocked if some of the question trap answers contain outputs from other codes. Also look how wind or...

    Joist / Joist Girder Shortage

Yes, do lots of joist work and I know steel just shot to about 100 bucks per ton this week and Vulcraft is quoting me about 22-24 week back logs on some if their joist and deck right now

    PM Strategy

With a,a,a,ir.... I think the advice is if it’s not broke.... sounds like you’d wanna focus on the am a bit more.

Anyone else's calander looking like Tetris?

Color coded my meeting schedule b/c was getting a bit out of hand, and couldn't help notice the resemblance to Tetris. Anyone else dealing with this?

Should I take the SE Exam?

As a slight fan of golf, I love the winter studying. Hard to focus on horizontal irregularities when its 75 and sunny out.

    Studying for SE while working

Been working from home since March 2020, and will at least thru July 2021, for obvious reasons. Great time to: 1) Organize office 2) Get a puppy 3) Study for SE

    I felt it!

Not too many EQs on this side of the globe but we get them occasionally.  (Detroit)

    7am Meetings

Agreed, 8a, isn't too bad, definitely not my favorite but way better than 7a.

    What's your preferred meeting tool?

Just curious...  Been using webex for ever, had to learn Skype and finally got good with it, then had to switch to Teams.  So those first few weeks from home, I was still getting ready, doing my hair and all that... After a couple months... Now if my first call is at 8a, I'll roll outta bed at...

    7am Meetings

I actually would rather have the 11p.  I have weekly mtgs with a Korean partner and they're at 830p on Tuesday and Thursdays... Which I have to miss the Tuesday bc of SE review, and the Thursday one (just ending) sucks... But not as much as the 7a.

    7am Meetings

I know exactly who you're talking about... Every office has the... "email blast everyone at 1030p on Saturday guy".. .  Ugh.
