    TENNESSEE - RESULTS Oct 2010

In my experience, if you do work for the Feds, they like to see someone who has taken the FPE exam. At least thats the way it was at the firm I worked at in East TN that did a bunch of DOE/DOD work.

The gap between the east and west in the $EC has been pretty evident all year. The east sucks.

Anybody got raise this year? Then how much?

Next year's rate is about 10% higher, but I'm a contractor, so its a bit different than most (lack of some benefits, etc). And it looks like my contract is fairly solid through September (of course, they could still send me home Monday). Still, I'm not complaining, its been my best year to date...

    College Bowl Pick'Em's 2010

DV, you should have consulted me first. I could have told you that was going to happen. We're terrible.

^^ Sucks, doesn't it, but I don't believe Squealers fans should be allowed to complain about the refs for the rest of the year after that Dolphins game.

Whenever they stop getting that NBC national TV contract. As long as they have that, they'll be independent in football.

    Desk souvenirs

I'm a contractor, so the only personal stuff on my desk is a picture of the wife and a few books. (I have to be able to pack up and leave in one paper box, the "drag box"). However, I do have some old radiation/contamination signs (I especially like the "dangerous when wet" sticker) stuck on the...

    Talking to boss

Also, if you conversation starts along the lines of "I received a job offer for $xxxxxx and wanted to talk with you about it", you have to be prepared to leave. From what it sounds like, you have a good relationship with your boss, so it probably is a low possibility, but I know folks (granted...

    Camping

Actually, my wife and I camped this past weekend. We went down to Chattanooga (which is a really cool town, btw), and tent camped for a couple of nights on the lake at a county park. We try to go at least once a year. When I was a kid, we had a pop-up (like the captain) and went all over the...

    Vacation Packages?

We went (just the wife and I) last October for a few days. We had a great time, but I would guess its a completely different experience with kids. The international food and wine festival at Epcot during October was awesome.

I think Utah and TCU play each other (this week maybe?), so at least that will work itself out. Once one of them loses they'll drop out of the top five (or top ten).

^ The Fins got hosed. The refs should just stop insulting our intelligence and wear Steelers jerseys the rest of the season.

Who To Call To Run Cable?

I can't remember, are you on a deployment over there, or are you there a civilian? The reason I ask is that around here, lots of the craftsmen I work with volunteer their time to help with "handyman" type jobs at houses where a family's father/husband is deployed. You may want to check locally...

    Annual performance reviews

I'm doing contract work through a small company now, so I don't have to do performance reviews anymore. My contract got renewed for another year a couple of weeks ago, so I guess I'm doing ok. Thats one thing I don't miss about bigger employers.

    Fundraisers

Here they sell school coupon books. Its actually the best fundraiser I've ever seen (with the possible exception of Girl Scout Cookies). At least its something I can use, as opposed to candybars or wrapping paper or whatnot. A lot of local vendors (and local franchises of the national chains)...
