    Truss Design

No, though it's helpful. I'm thinking in terms of drag trusses, where a single roof truss distributes the diaphragm load to a wall below via a DSC2 or DSC5 connector. Or, if your analysis allows parallel chord trusses, where a shear wall above is connected to an in-plane offset shear wall...

    The Automotive Thread

'04 Kia, has 113k miles on it (13k in the last 10 months, most of which is "local" driving). It runs reasonably well, about 33 mpg, and I fit really well in it despite being 6'3 in a compact.

Are pdhonline.org or pdhengineer.com Any Good?

I suspect it varies based on field and location. I do 90% of my work in the SE field (and will hopefully be sitting for the SE next April), and I here in Seattle I can easily go to about one vendor-supplied lunch & learn event a month. In Eugene, I think we heard about one every two to...

    CFLs

I had a client (that went to school to become an ME) that intended to put one of those in to heat a spa, but had to back off the plan when he realized he had to use explosives to dig down far enough into the rock his house was going to sit on. (He abandoned the entire pool idea.) I've also...

College Majors that Require the Most Effort

Wait, learning engineering is supposed to be hard? Why don't people tell me these things? (If I'd had free choice of majors, my choices would have been between religion, psychology/psychiatry, English/Teaching, or computers.)

What series have you watched on Netflix/Hulu/etc...

If it's gratuitous, there's a problem. Gratuitous anything should generally be avoided - write a plot that can stand on it's own and actors that can keep a show interesting. Not to say that there isn't a place for *** scenes, mind. But they should be plot-relevant. Take Lost Girl for example...

What series have you watched on Netflix/Hulu/etc...

Hit & Miss. Also Orange is the New Black. I'm going to try Hemlock Grove soon. West Wing.

TV shows you once liked, but now don't

Oh, I forgot Orphan Black as a show I watch. Best modern-day sci-fi show I've seen in a long time. The characters with the most screen/plot time are: Sarah Manning, an English-American played by Tatiana Maslany. Alison Hendrix, an American soccer mom played by Tatiana Maslany. Cosima...

TV shows you once liked, but now don't

I disagree. It wasn't for everyone, and it had some issues (not the least of which were some seriously unlikeable characters), but as a concept it was one of the better sci-fi shows of the past decade. It would have been better if it'd been a little more futuristic, though.

TV shows you once liked, but now don't

I watch way too much TV. This summer, though, it's down to a minimum - Continuum and Dexter. It's Dex's final season, so yay for that. Shows I used to watch that I don't anymore, though? If you mean current shows, I don't think I have any... I tend to stick with my shows to the bitter end...

Driving somewhere? There's a gov't record of that

I used to laugh at the concept behind Person of Interest. These days I cry instead.

Vote looms in Ga. over solar power usage

Actually solar's doable in the PNW. It's not quite as fantastic as it is elsewhere, and some areas have issues due to snow, but down in Seattle and Eugene the drawback isn't that it's extremely ineffective to use solar (we do lose some, but not that much IIRC), it's that we already have...

    Post Zimmerman trial riots?

I hope there won't be riots, but i wouldn't bet on it. That said, I don't expect them to be as bad as the Rodney King riots - The Rodney King situation was one where the perception was that blatantly racist cops attacked someone and were effectively protected by the establishment and by an...

Washing hands after going to the restroom

I wash my hands every time, but when I'm in a public restroom I almost invariably use just water due to allergen issues with chemicals in most soaps*. That said, it's rarely a "quick rinse"; I still do all the scrubbing I do at home, I just don't use soap. At home I have soap that doesn't...

    Truss Design

This is a fantastic idea. If I knew more about coding, I'd help out. Sadly, I don't. If you don't mind a (probably headache-inducing) suggestion - point loads (both top and bottom chord) would be handy, as would lateral/axial chord loads.

Wind loads for buildings built in early 80's

Probably not. Back in the wild days before 2000, there were quite a few building codes used nationwide. Check this site, it has archived building codes: https://bulk.resource.org/codes.gov/ Edit: And, of course, only goes to the 1990s. Sigh.

    Job Title "Engineer" without PE?

In case anyone else asks this question - this is correct. Technically you can't even identify yourself as an engineer verbally without clarifying what state. When I worked in a similar situation, I would (when asked if I was "one of the engineers") explain that I was a licensed P.E. but not in...

    I-5 bridge collapse

The bridge clearance is listed in the document I linked earlier, but as I mentioned in my previous post there were no other signs. Reportedly there was a pilot car, and the mandated measuring device WAS hitting the bridge, so either the pilot car guy or the truck driver screwed up.

    I-5 bridge collapse

WSDOT is saying it's not their fault, that the driver should have known... despite the fact that they don't have signs posted saying the bridge has low clearance. I'm not sure about WSDOT, but I can't imagine getting out of my car at each bridge to verify the height. I suppose that they could...

    PE + CET degree

Probably California; this assumes that you can pass the state-specific exam of course. It's been a few years since I looked it up, but CA requires 3 years experience for EIT and 3 for PE, with up to 5 years credited for education (with or without degree). Washington requires 4 & 4. Oregon...
