NCEES practice sample exam problem #140

Hi Saad85, I believe you are talking about the cascading feewater heater problem.  The main problem is that you have two unknown mass flow rates, the entering saturated liquid (m_1) and the leaving saturated liquid (m_3).  The problem asks you to solve for m_3.  Since you have two unknowns, you...

New Mechanical PE specifications for the April 2017 exams

Hi spacebanjo, I would not suggest bringing the API or B31 codes.  Those codes are quite large.  In my opinion you should only be aware of the codes and when they are used.  For a test taker to test those codes would not prove that an individual is competent as a Thermal and Fluids engineer.  I...

Psychometic Problems while being prohibited from marking materials

Hi spacebanjo, I don't think you should be too worried about the SHR type questions, because I doubt that a testmaker would make possible exam solutions very close to one another, such that a slight difference in a SHR would cause a different exam solution.  Also you can break up the SHR into...

    HVAC vs Th/Fl Tests

Hi apford, My name is Justin.  I took the HVAC & Refrigeration exam in 2008 and passed.  I was similar to you, I worked for an MEP consulting firm and primarily designed chilled water plants (not too much heating in Hawaii, so no boiler plants).  I also recognized that there were problems...

Key Equations and Terms for HVAC & Refrigeration

Yes, some of the equations apply. It should also be helpful for your morning session exam. From my experience, the morning session problems that deal with HVAC & Refrigeration have been somewhat straight forward and sometimes are completed by simply using the correct equation.

    HVAC Insulation

I would refer to the manufacturer's information for the different types of duct and pipe insulation like: Owens Corning, Armacell, Johns Manville. MERM

I had the same experience and used the same reference materials(a consecutive set of ASHRAE books and the MERM). Look in ASHRAE if you want more HVAC material.

Would Anyone Like to Share Cheat Sheets?

I agree that it would be difficult to capture all the necessary equations for the test and you will definitely have to turn to your references(so be able to navigate them with ease). Cheat sheets can be a good study method. They are a great way to (1) summarize your months of studying, (2) put...

LEED Accreditation – Fad or Necessity?

LEED AP is a necessity in the consulting business. I am pretty sure most federal contracts require the consulting team to have a LEED AP and most states are following, Hawaii including. I work for a MEP consulting firm and I know that our firm was passed up on a job because we did not have an...
