NCEES Podcast on transition to Computer Based SE Exam

Not sure if this has been posted or not, but it's an NCEES podcast with information about the transition to the Computer Based SE Exam. https://ncees.org/podcast-jason-gamble/ Biggest takeaway is that the SE Exam will now be a 4-part 20+ hour exam. But once you pass a part, you are done with...

SE Buildings Vertical & Lateral - Fall 2022

I am a "Building Depth" engineer and took the building SE exam. I wrote my book (Bridge Problems for the Structural Engineering (SE) Exam for the building engineer who needs some review for the 10-12 bridge multiple choice questions you will see on both components of the SE exam. I think if you...

    Tabbing Reference Material

I would follow the NCEES spec sheet and try to tab as best you can based on that. Some other suggestions. 1. Don't "overtab". If you do, you will have so many tabs that it is more difficult to find a particular tab defeating the purpose of tabbing all together. 2. Don't rush the tabbing...

Bridge Problems for the Structural Engineering (SE) Exam - 3rd Edition (AASHTO 8th Edition) now available

I agree with the opinions that the braking force should be applied at the top of the roadway surface and that makes more sense to me physically speaking. However, the AASHTO code specifically states that the braking forces act at 6'-0" above the roadway and that is why the moment arm includes...

SE Exam Design Standards - AASHTO Specification

Yep, it's a book that I wrote after I took the SE exam back in 2014. It was the book I wish I had for studying bridge problems. Being that I'm a "building" structural engineer I really needed help with bridge problems. However, at the time there was very little out there. Only a handful of...

SE Exam Design Standards - AASHTO Specification

I can attest that the changes from AASHTO 7th to 8th edition were substantial. Especially wind loads on bridges. However, the wind loads are very similar to determining building wind loads now.

Bridge Problems for the Structural Engineering (SE) Exam - 3rd Edition (AASHTO 8th Edition) now available

They are the same problems, but updated to the AASHTO 8th edition code. FYI, the AASHTO 8th edition has extensive revisions vs. AASHTO 7th edition. In a nutshell wind loads on bridges are now similar to the buildings and the concrete portion of the code has been revamped so all of the seismic...

    Joist / Joist Girder Shortage

Anyone else out there hearing about a joist shortage? Any new orders for joists, joist girders, metal deck won't be filled until 2022. Hopefully that's just hyperbole due to heavier than normal backlogs, but that's what I'm hearing.

Should I take the SE Exam?

I definitely concur in taking each component separately, unless you are a glutton for punishment! :)

    SPECIFICATIONS

You will go crazy if you try to guess what questions may be on the exam, but not necessarily in the NCESS SE Exam specifications. I would strictly stick to the NCEES specs and get a good broad knowledge of those items. If a question is on the exam that you think doesn't match the specs, you...

    AISC DESIGN GUIDES

They aren't in the NCESS SE Exam Specs, so I wouldn't waste too much time on them or worry about them too much.
