I'm going to have to say The Rockford Files. Cool car, trashy trailer on a tony peice of real estate, and a hero who was cool even though he got beat up a lot. Plus, the ensemble cast was awesome, and the guest stars were pretty good, too.
Agreed. Don't forget about a hooky theme song too.

I'd concur too on Magnum as runnerup.

 
Rockford's answering machine messages were always funny at the start of the show, too.

 
Spenser For Hire was a pretty good PI show when I was a kid.

My folks had the books, which were set in an earlier time period. I'm not a big cop drama guy, but I read a couple of those as they take place in the Boston area and I am familiar with some of the locales.

 
My favorite is Psych. The plots are predictable and the few action sequences are corny, but I love Shawn and Gus' repartee. Plus I haven't heard of most of the ones you guys mentioned because I'm in my twenties...and what's an answering machine? Is that like Google Sucks Voice?
