Hi,
SII practice exam question 450 d) Determine the column design load for column C-2 and square HSS size.
Seismic Design Category D
Ordinary Steel Concentrically Braced Frames
Live load is snow load
Answer uses LRFD Equation 1.2D+1.0E+L
and they directly plug in the actual calculated seismic force for E and treat the snow load like a live load.
Shouldn't they use BLC 5. (1.2+.2Sds)D+pQe+.2S
or 5. (1.2+.2Sds)D+(omega)(Qe)+.2S ??
In this problem, how do you decide whether or not to use the overstrength factor for the column design?
IBC SDM example 1A SCBF, SDC E (not stated, but S1>0.75) applies overstrength to the columns in the braced frames.
There is Errata on this problem, but the same equations are used.
Thank you!
