In the solution for problem #19, after finding the shear for two-way action, the next step is to sum the shear forces acting on the footing to determine the footing depth.

The equation becomes d^2(v + q/4) + d(v + q/2)w = (B^2 - w^2)Q/4

Can anyone explain the summation of these forces.

Thanks

Cavalier,

Can you paste or type the problem statement into a post? I have the civil structural depth 6-minute, which apparently has the same problems rearranged (similar to the SE 6-minute).

Thanks,

McEngr

BTW, I've worked through all of the problems at least twice.
