I thought that was maybe a movie still from "Fantastic 4-Rise of the Silver Surfer", where the Surfer drills a bunch of pilot holes so the Earth can get sucked dry by Galactus (I'm not really that big a comic geek, I just pretend)

Alas, it's real. And it's not the first.
