Can someone please confirm my belief:

If given Sides, Bearing & Length and then i found Lat and Dep:

Side.......Bearing..........Length..........Latitude........Departure

AB...........S23W............940.79.........-866.00........-367.60

BC............N65W..........220.50..........+93.19..........-199.84

If the question ask to find Latitude and Departure of side CA. Would it be +866.00-93.19= 772.81 for Latitude, since reversing direction and +367.60+199.84= 57.44?

If answer is yes, is this typical for all similiar problems given two sides lat and dep and asked to find the closing unknown lat and dep.

I assume you meant 567.44 in the departure, best way to work this out is to make a sketch and work out the triangles, but if you ate in a hurry like in an exam the bearings will tell you what to do. If they are going in the same direction for example west, the sum will be a greater western difference from the original point. If they are different the opposite will be true. In the end it all works down to coordinates, put A at 0,0 and the difference will be the coordinate of the last point.

Here is my solution:

side Lat dep

AB -866.0 -367.6

BC +93.18 -199.84

so the coordinate of C is (-866.0+93.18) = -772.82N and (-367.6+-199.84) = -567.44E

so the latitude or north difference is -772.82 from A

and the departure or east differnece is -567.44 from A

and reverse the signs to go from C to A because you will be going North East

I assume you are studying for the SIT or LS, it is just like finding the error of closure in your traverse.
