Ok, dr's orders were to start feeding minisnick high cal/fat solid foods. He really wants nothing to do with it. We were doing ok the first few days with avocado and rice cereal or potato. We have started added other foods to his diet and he is not cooperating. Last night he went as far as purposely gagging to get the food off his tongue, which in turn made him spit up the milk he had a hr earlier.

Any ideas to get a resisting baby to eat?

When you find out, you'll know more than me. We learned that if our little girl did not want to eat, we were not forcing her. They will eat when they are hungry.

Kids are funny with eating too; our little girl can eat a whole banana on Monday, then Tuesday can take one bite of banana and say "I no like it..."

Is it one specific food type he's resistant to, like starches or meat? Or is it across the board?

^No honey until 1 year.

Our experience is much like ktulu's with Mini Ble. There are some days that he will eat everything that you give him, and then when you give him the exact same food a couple of days later, he acts like it's disgusting. One thing that we have found is that he eats a lot better when we are eating with him and giving him food off of our plates. When we set him in his high chair and try to feed him when no one else is eating, you never know if he's going to eat it or not. Good luck!

I'm in the same company as ktulu - we tried forcing food one time (while on vacation because we were in a hurry) and ended up seeing the food again. If the kids aren't hungry, we don't force them.

That's a tough situation to be in, are there other options beside avacado / etc. that might be more tasty? High cal/high fat... candybars?

Let him eat as many m&m's as possible?

Mmmm, french fries..... Everybody loves french fries.

If Mini no eat the FF, you definitely need to have him checked - TO MAKE SURE HE'S A'MERICAN!!!

As enticing as that sounds, I don't need to add dentist visits to our weekly weight check schedule.

we don't usually force but the dr office called yesterday to check on our progress since minisnick didn't gain any weight since his appoint with the specialist. They want 4 solid food feedings along with his 3-4 hr nursing schedule. So I tried and it didn't work. Since he prefers a liquid diet, might just need to add formula to his bottles to get the cals up.

He has been stuck at 12.5 lbs for a couple months, no matter how much he eats.

He does like fries...they have to be lightly or nonsalted though. We went to portillos when were in Chicago area a couple weekends ago and I gave him some fry mush, but they were a little on the salty side that day. The expression on his face was priceless when he tasted the salt

Resistance is futile...

I raised two boys and they did have their trying moments when eating but I saw it more when their friends came over. Oddly their friends would eat with us at our table without trouble, make a full meal with startch, meat and vegs. Everyone sit down and pass the food around take what your want, have good conversation (TV off), and everyone would eat. Our friends would ask what we did to get their kids to eat, and we would say nothing they just sat with us like a family. There way alway plenty of fruit for a snack but very rarely a cooking of chip to be found.

Ice cream? That's pretty high fat/high calorie. We also did the trick of mixing rice cereal in the bottle. Use a high flow nipple.

Corn syrup used to be part of the milk formula mix. If you add a little to any food, it might help.

If the doctor wants Mini to eat more, make the doctor feed him. Don't get freaked out because kiddo isn't gaining weight, as all kids grow differently. All you can do is provide a good balanced diet, and just make sure you have a splatter-shield for those feedings when they're not as enthusiastic.

Both of my kiddos ate when they were hungry. No more, no less. We did start to supplement some of their foods with rice cereal (like a pinch flakes in the formula/breast milk bottle or mixing some with fruits or veggies they liked). Like others have said, some days they love one food and the next day they'll hate it, just be sure to keep a well-stocked selection for those days. I remember having probably about 10-15 half-eaten jars of baby food in the fridge that would make the daily rotation. If after 2 days in the fridge it wasn't done, it went into the trash (but that was rare).

We did have some good luck with the various Gerber meat baby foods. Both kiddos liked turkey and ham, not so much with the others although we still got the full variety cus they'd still eat it once in a while.

How did I know this would figure prominently in Dexman's feeding strategy?

Damn. I should consider myself fortunate after reading these posts on feeding difficulties. Mini-MS does a really good job at eating "solid" foods. We started him at 5 monthsish (I forget exactly). He CANNOT GET ENOUGH of sweet potatoes unless his stomach is brimming over. I've never seen a baby's mouth so wide and arms so outstretched for the next bite of anything. He likes brown rice cereal plain, but we've recently been adding things to the cereals - such as banana, kiwi, avocado, etc... He wasn't the biggest fan of banana at first, though.

Oh, and he will have NOTHING to do with anything mixed with booby milk. He loves milk so much that if anything is mixed with it, we believe he considers it tainted.

Nice, a breast purist. As long as he doesn't develop into an elitist, he should be fine.

Would you expect anything less?
