I'm starting my phd in the fall. I'm in research, not teaching. Are you thinking about it?

Yes, I have four classes left in my Construction Management grad program and was thinking of doing a PhD in the civil/construction area.

But I would be 40 by the time I started a PhD program.

Not sure if it matters but I am a P.E. with a decent municipal job.

It depends on what your end game is. What do you plan to do with the higher degree, how does it aid your long term goals, etc,? Only you can answer those questions.
