    Cryo Tank Demo Estimate

Any thoughts on someplace to get some sort of reference to generate an estimate to demo a 500,000 liquid hydrogen tank? Usually, we can go back through previous projects and escalate for inflation, but this isn't something that gets done very often. I've also been through all 5 of our RS Means...

    Halloween

The weather was not very cooperative so we had to set everything up the day of so it was a very long day, but it came together pretty well...probably had a couple hundred people come through.

Retired Engineer Being Charged for Practicing w/o a License

Article YouTube Somehow, this popped up on my YouTube feed, but peaked my interest enough to look into it a little bit. Guy like to provide “expert testimony” pro bono. In this case he was representing a flooded homeowner as an expert witness. The video was produced by the group representing...

    Baseball 2021

Back at the ballpark for another season. Definitely a lot nicer with fans, albeit limited, back in the stadium. GABP has people situated in pods this year so "ungrouped" people aren't sitting together. Technically, people are supposed to be wearing their masks at all times but that went out the...

    Happy St. Patrick's Day

Another thing that's a little disappointing about being on full-time telework, I don't get a chance to wear my kilt in to work. I would usually wear it for St. Paddy's Day at the VA and everyone would get a kick out of it. Hey, there wasn't anything in our safety regs about guys having to wear...

When’s SpaceX Going to Mars...I’m Leaving

This f-in twit uses Gorilla Glue when she runs out of hairspray and she: 1. Is up to $9k on GoFundMe for her medical bills 2. Got an offer for free plastic surgery 3. Apparently found a lawyer creepy enough to sue the ER and Gorilla Glue Her excuse is, the can said not to use on eyes...

    Halloween 2020

It's not Halloween until the Bowers go overboard.  The "Haunted Trail at the Bower Asylum" ended up using a generator and an air compressor this year. First time in a few years that we actually had good weather and I put a post on the Township FB group so we probably had a couple hundred people...

Repay Loan Faster or Contribute More Retirement?

With the move to DOE came a bump in pay, but now I'm trying to figure out what to with some of it.  If this were a standard $$$ issue I know the easy answer would be to get the loan paid off first, but this isn't standard because it was a TSP loan.  For those who don't know, the Thrift Savings...

    Ex-Boss Guilty of Soliciting

Not that kind of soliciting you pervs. Clermont County Engineer Pat Manger pleads guilty to charge of soliciting or accepting improper compensation; resigns from office Karma's a bitch.  So this was the guy who took over as Clermont County Engineer a couple years into my stint there.  Pulled...

    Dept. of Energy

Would have put this in the Gov't Employees group but it doesn't see much use. Trying to remember if anyone here works for the DOE.  I got a job offer yesterday.  I love it here at the VA, but then the DOE threw "GS-13 Step 3" at me.

Better to Cancel a Job Interview or Wait and See?

If you've decided a job wouldn't work, would it be better to cancel a job interview ahead of time or do the interview and deal with it if you end up getting an offer?  This is still something that could work in the future so I don't want to burn any bridges. Got a call from the Air Force Civil...

    DIY Geocaching?

The boys still have a few more weeks of summer vacation left.  When they're at their mom's house they generally sit in front of the Xbox or iPad all day.  I want to make sure that isn't happening at our house.  One thing I thought about doing is setting up a "prize" back in the woods that they...

Veterans Affairs is Hiring in Cincy/Ft. Wayne

Doesn't happen very often, but apparently our VISN is in such need for a few Engineers that they are cutting some of the usual red tape and allowing us to direct hire.  This is at the Cincinnati VA, but from what I'm hearing around the office, they desperately need people up at the Ft. Wayne, IN VA.

    Overwhelmed Sump Pump?

Guy on a motorcycle forum I'm on is having some issues with the house he just got.  Basement is getting water even though it has two sump pumps.  My first thought is that his house must be in a hole or something the way water is pouring in. Thoughts on what the problem is?

Any (free) Courses Available for Fed Gov't Employees?

Now that I am with the VA, getting hours is becoming more difficult.  USACE required training every year, and you could take one course and get enough credit to cover two years.  At the VA we still have to do training but a lot of it is stuff that wouldn't count, i.e. patient privacy, hand...

    Stupid Washing Machine

Playing softball last night when the wife calls.  Said there was a haze in the laundry room and it smelled like burning oil.  The washing machine had started making a lot more noise, but everything I read said there was not a whole lot to do about it.  Trying to get it fixed was...

Looking for a Construction Management App

We just got new iPad Pros at work.  Unlike our computers, we've got a little freedom with our apps...on our PC's I can't even go in and change my mouse settings  . I started searching around a little bit, but I'm thinking some sort of construction/project management app would be a...

How Long to Bust Up Some Concrete?

How long do you think it should take to bust in the top of an empty electric manhole? Vault is about 6-ft x 10-ft and, I'm assuming, probably about 4-in thick. Contractor is grading/paving around our parking garage. There's an electric manhole lid that is supposed to be adjusted to grade...

    Is This Room Negative?

Forgive me for the stupid question, but I'm not a mechanical guy.  Our infection control nazi has decided that the barber shop in our new addition has to be negative.  She was here when we reviewed the design.  She walked through the building during construction every Monday morning.  She waits...
