Everything you wanted to know about the CA-Survey/Seismic Civil PE Exams

Thanks ptatohed! Just trying to reciprocate the help I've received here over the years. Looking at those numbers, there's a good possibility they are a tad low. While I didn't do much more than 1-2 hours on weekdays (who can with a full time job anyway?), I do recall the last few weeks I was...

Everything you wanted to know about the CA-Survey/Seismic Civil PE Exams

Thought I'd add my 2 cents from when I took the seismic and survey exams: Seismic Used Mansour as my primary reference, ASCE 7-10 as my supplemental reference. They were the only two I brought into the test center. Additionally I bought every other seismic book/practice exam available on the...

    PE License? MS?

Not a problem, it's always a pleasure when there's a chance I can give back to the community. These forums have been extremely helpful over the years.

    PE License? MS?

Speaking from direct experience: Many will tell you an MS and PE don't necessarily increase your pay or promote you to a higher title. I would agree completely. The benefits they do provide however are invaluable, and I attribute much of my very successful career to these two items, even 10...

When/how to ask for a raise after getting the good news of passing the PE exam

Hey Porter that's a great source! I did a bit of searching and found some information on the 2013 results. Median Salary for Engineers in Orange County, CA (my area): $116,500 Median Salary for Enigneers in Wichita, KS: $129,500 Cost of living calculator I found from CNN Money indicated that...

When/how to ask for a raise after getting the good news of passing the PE exam

While our goods and services are on par, our housing market is way out of control. A 700k+ house is going to be required to get in a neighborhood with halfway decent schools, and my California paycheck does not come close to making up that difference. At the end of the day I get the sense that...

When/how to ask for a raise after getting the good news of passing the PE exam

Hi Ramnares, City of Laguna Beach I've heard direct from their HR department, and City of Long Beach and City of Oxnard by word of mouth. I'm sure there are others.

When/how to ask for a raise after getting the good news of passing the PE exam

I made well over your listed market rate with my EIT. My PE results are pending right now (8-hour passed, seismic and survey results TBD) and I am well over your listed market rate for PE. Also, I know of 3 public works agencies off the top my head that give you a 5% bump for having a PE...

    Bad advice to previous poster

Yes, a chair on the party planning commitee should not be taken lightly. Progressive resonsibility is the name of the game. I'm about to give my 2 weeks notice to my current employer, what should I say?

missing data in problem #1, seismic exam April 2015

Ohh I see. I could buy into that. Like there is a certain question for one examinee , and for another examinee it is the same question with different values. Not that this makes any difference...my brain likes to wander at times =).

missing data in problem #1, seismic exam April 2015

It wouldn't be much of a standardized test if the questions were not the same. I'm sure the order is different though as you mentioned.

missing data in problem #1, seismic exam April 2015

I am fairly certain we all got the same questions. I too do not recall missing any information to solve any questions. There was also one question I am pretty sure did not have the correct answer, I noted it in the comments after the exam concluded.

Feel good about how you did on the exam?

Just took the April 2015 California Seismic exam for the first time. Wow talk about a demoralizing exam! And I though biting nails over the 8 hour last fall was bad...

    Failures... What was your score?

I think it really depends on the person...I used the CERM as my ONLY reference material and I just found out I passed first time in Civil WR. It's a great resource but (in my opinion) you really need to work out and perfect your strategy for using it come test day.

    The famous cut score

Generally, If law makers get to make decisions on the direction of policy, does that make all public discussions pertaining to those decisions pointless? There are many things we do not directly vote on that merit public discussion regardless because they affect us. We as the engineering...

    The famous cut score

Sapper, I believe he is referring to the concept that a cut score is developed based on the performance of the exam takers for a given exam. If an examinee got 5 out of 10 questions right, and 3 of the questions he got right are thrown out, he now has a final score of 2 out of 7, or 29%. If...

Feel good about how you did on the exam?

snickered/Nici, I did not know I had that recourse. I will log into my NCEES account and do that right away. Great to know that option is available! This may indeed help me sleep at night.

Feel good about how you did on the exam?

There was one question on the civil PE/water resources afternoon session that I am positive I did correctly but could not find the correlating answer in the answer choices and it's driving me crazy! The calculation involved in that particular question is one I do at work at least once a month...
