    MD six min solutions

    I agree with the solution A = 5e-4 m^2 rho = 8602 kg/m^3 M = .0015 kg V = M/rho = 1.744e-7 m^3 depth = V/A = 3.488e-4 m depth/time = 3.488e-4 m/72h = 4.8438 m/hr = 42460 e-6 m/yr

Same boat. But this is a problem you want. Much better to wait for a database update than for test results. Or to not care about the database because you failed.

I want to hammer something home. Shigley's is a big, scary book, but there a literally fewer than five equations in each chapter that are going to solve you problems. You have to reduce the contents of these chapters down to the elegant results and go solve problems.

SMott, I should have predicated the Shigley's comment with the fact that I did machine design. For other depths, I doubt that it's needed. What I eventually discovered is that most machine design questions in any 6 minute format (e.g., 6ms or sample tests) were practically canned questions...

Have you met or used the excuse of "overqualification" in your career? What's your opinion with that in a recruiting process?

I wouldn't list a GPA unless it was very good. I wouldn't list coursework unless it's graduate -level work. Engineering curricula are identical across the country. Being overqualified for a job is a real thing--some managers just need a junior guy to come in cheap, do the menial tasks and take...

^^ I recommend not to get bogged down in the MERM problems. They are too long to be productive. By the time you finish these problems, you've not only wasted 45 minutes looking up things you will never have to look up on the test, but your too exhausted to profit from the experience. It's much...

    PE and Money

If you have changed industries multiple times and have little experience in the job you are currently in, then $55k might not be far off. Ecruz is right that the city you are in really matters here. Also, an MBA does not make you a much better junior engineer. That will be a much bigger asset...

I have found this website to be eerily accurate. Off the top of my head, though, assuming some years of experience plus your certs: 0-2 years www.engineersalary.com

Passed CA Mechanical Systems and Materials. Got an e-mail around 12:30, just happened to check e-mail almost that minute and got on the NCEES site before it crashed. I'm not posted on the license lookup yet.

    Help with bending/shear stress Calculation

All good points. Roarkes formulas for stress and strain also has this case. I just checked and then saw that I had tabbed the page because that case was not in the MERM.

    Help with bending/shear stress Calculation

The geometry is not clear from your description. If you post an engineering drawing (jpg, dwg, whatever), I can get into detail. In general, though 1. Look at the beam diagrams in the MERM appendix. From there you can get the moment at the joints. 2. You can calculate the shear in your head...
