    Good luck, everyone!

Good luck with this final week of studying.

    Partial credit for afternoon problems

I got an email from someone who unfortunately failed a part of the SE exam. They however did find an interesting nugget of information; at the end of the afternoon they ran out of time and had to write out steps for the problem. In their words: This has been confirmed before; however I don't...

    SE Exam Cut Score Estimate

I posted this for the PPI review course takers but wanted to share it here as well to see if people drew the same conclusion. I went through this forum and gathered as many failing scores as I could find to try to roughly determine the "cut score" that one could typically expect to see on the SE...

    NCEES 2015 Design Standards

Not sure who else has noticed but the NCEES has released the 2015 Design Standards and they've updated the codes as we expected: http://cdn4.ncees.co/wp-content/uploads/2012/11/Str-Saturday-AM-Lateral-Forces_2011.pdf It appears they also removed the requirement for masonry to use ASD unless...

    Masonry design references

The past week I've been going back through everything skimming here, refreshing there, studying a few problems from each area. I've realized that I have very few references for the lateral forces design of masonry structures that I can quickly reference during the lateral exam or just generally...

    Alloweable stress increase of 1.2

Anyone know what the justification for the allowable stress increase of 12.4.3.3 is for load combinations with overstrength under ASD? Seems silly to have gone to so much trouble to get LRFD and ASD balanced and then give ASD a bonus when using overstrength.

    ASCE 7 flowcharts

Some shameless self-promotion here but I wanted to make sure people studying for the SE lateral portion of the exam don't miss these. Andy (SEHQ on here) and I worked up some flowcharts for Chapter 11 and 12 of ASCE 7. These flowcharts will hopefully be invaluable for the SE exam as the seismic...

    Concrete shear wall minimum rebar

Looking over the special concrete shear wall design in chapter 21 of ACI I'm wondering about the minimum rebar ratios prescribed by 21.9.2.1 when the shearwall has flanges. The definitions of ρl and ρt in chapter 1 refer to gross concrete area perpendicular to the reinforcement. For the gross...

    So, how did it go?

So, now that another 16 hour structural exam is out of the way, how do you feel? (Please remember not to post exam questions, NCEES watches and all that!) Personally, I think it went okay. I only took lateral (passed vertical last year) but overall it was pretty much what I expected. I did...

ASD vs. LRFD NCEES sample exam prob. 801

So, in continuing my last minute cramming totally thought out review for the exam next weekend I decided to run through the afternoon problems of the lateral section. Problem 801 has us design a masonry wall using the ASD combinations from the 2006 IBC. If you follow through that then you get...

    Concrete diaphragm example

So, final prep for the exam and I'm going through all my examples making lists of which ones to refer to for which topic. I've discovered that none of my references have a concrete diaphragm design example. This problem caused me to fail my first vertical attempt because I didn't have my...

    How ready do you feel?

Less than a month out, how do you guys feel about this coming exam? As I'm taking lateral and work in a non-seismically active area I've been going nuts studying as much seismic design examples and references as I can. I've just about wrapped up wind design, wood, and steel to a comfortable...

    AISC Seismic Provisions

So, I have the lateral coming up in April. Digging around the office I have the 2005 supplement No. 1 version of AISC 341-05. The required documents list for 2014 lists that the second printing (2006) or the third printing (2008) are the standards used. Do I really need to buy the new version...

    NASCC Presentations

Figured I'd put these out there for those studying for the SE (and in general) as I'm not sure how many people are aware they're on the net for free: www.aisc.org/searchtaxonomy/conproceedings.aspx?id=4424 These are the conference proceedings from North American Steel Construction Conference...

    ACI 530 section 3.3.5.4

ACI 530 section 3.3.5.4 states that the design of masonry walls can be done using that section if Puf/Ag < 0.20f'm (or 0.05f'm). Great! But what do we do if we can't meet this? Do we desugn it like a column and use strain compatibility with the cracked section?

Multispan load tables and AASHTO load tables

In my previous attempt to pass the Structural Vertical exam I know likely missed at least two multiple choice questions because I apparently was expected to have some reference tables of multispan and AASHTO load tables, which I did not have and don't even know where to find. Does anyone know...

    Everyone ready?

So, tomorrow and Saturday are the big days. Everyone ready? I could probably use another month of working out problems but I don't think it would make or break me come tomorrow. I guess I'm about as ready as I'll ever be. As long as I can get those essay portions done. How is everyone bringing...

    SE Exam Test Prep Topic

So, I'm creating this topic for any and all engineers taking the SE exam this weekend to discuss anything and everything they want. Some good things I think we could all use is any special references or documents we feel are good to have, any examples that we feel cover a topic really well, and...
