i got my letter today and passed (norcal)! but the database has not been updated. as said before by others, i've heard many times that it takes a few days.

pretty much they're a bunch of a**holes. it's what i've been saying since the seismic exam.

    Caisson/Pier Frictional Resistance

i would assume it's to end up with a larger factor of safety. if you only use one or the other, when in reality you would have some of both in most cases, then you deliberately overdesign. for short piles, they may just be neglecting skin friction, since in some soils it is considered to...

what do you need to pass

sorry to hear you didn't pass. i'm still waiting on results, it could be i'm in the same boat, although i felt decent about it when i was done, but maybe i just missed ones i thought i got right! what are you doing to prepare? I put a lot of time into studying, and took a review course. i...

    Geotech PM

I took afternoon geotech and thought it was pretty straightforward. There were a couple questions I couldn't do, but otherwise I think it went well. i had done a lot of practice problems and felt pretty well prepared for what I saw on the test.

    Civil PE April 2010

i thought the whole test was pretty straight forward. the morning section went well, I took geotech in the afternoon, which i had done a ton of practice problems for and felt like I could do most of the problems. i felt pretty good about it coming out of test.

Unit Weight vs Sat Unit Weight in the CERM Sample Exam

think about it this way - if you stick the corner of a paper towel in water, just about the whole thing will become saturated, but it won't be below the water line. soil can act in the same manner. saturated just means all the voids are filled with water, it doesn't mean there's free standing...

Unit Weight vs Sat Unit Weight in the CERM Sample Exam

a soil can be saturated and not be below the water table. unless they explicitly state where the water table is, I would not assume that it's there.

    Bearing Direction

they distribute the error out to all segments because without knowing where the error came from, it can only be assumed to be a cummulative error from all the measurements. so it gets distributed out to them in proportion to their length. there are other ways of adjusting and correcting a...

NCEES Civil PE Sample Exam #518 & 519

actually, for the length they should get 7, since there's a factor of safety of 1.5.

NCEES Civil PE Sample Exam #518 & 519

I'm not sure how they solve it, and my approach my not be what they were thinking of. but I would look at the caisson as being a cantilevered beam fixed at one end subject to a uniform load (need to take the portion of the load normal to the surface). There is a standard equation in structural...

    Bearing Direction

maybe looking at it another way - if I'm thinking about this correctly, then the reason you are going in the negative direction is because in summing up the lat and dep you had a positive error for both (too many of each in the positive direction). to correct this, the closing line has to go in...

    Response Modification Coef.

my review instructor advised us "R used for design at any story shall not exceed the lowest value of R that is used in the same direction at any story above that story." what that basically means is that starting at the top story, R cannot increase as you go down story by story. So for this...

geotech six minute solutions prob 38

thanks all, i checked the errata for the edition and printing that i have (2 and 2) and they didn't note anything, but it certainly appears to be an error, unless there's something else i'm not seeing.

geotech six minute solutions prob 38

can anyone explain the solution to this problem? I understand the concept, but don't understand the math they are using. The total head loss in the problem is the difference between the two free water surfaces - which is 12 + 15 = 27 on the left side and 12 on the downstream side, so the total...

    Primary consolidation

i agree with the above. for consolidation, since the pressure at the top of the clay layer will be less than at the bottom of the clay layer (due to the weight of the clay on that bottom portion), pressure is always calculated for the middle of that layer to get an average pressure for the...

Water Resources or Geotech? Which to Take

I've heard it depends on which state you're in and what they do. some states make you pick a depth section when you submit your application.
