Just got my butt kicked by the NCEES sample questions...

19/40 Isn't bad for just a couple weeks of studying. But having only studied a couple weeks with only two weeks until the exam is somewhat pushing it. When I took the PE exam last fall I felt it was easier than the NCEES sample exam.

    Air Flow Question

No. Imagine a System (1)------(FAN)------(2) So lets think about this as water pipe pump problem. An open system and pressure is measured in feet. (1) is at 10 ft (2) is at 20 ft and the friction lose of the entire system is equal to 40 feet of water. So lets solve for the pump (fan)...

    NYS PE Reference materials?

It's there on NYSED website. Consider finding it the first test in becoming an Engineer :) IMO that's the what we do, search for shit. Everything has to be bound, in ink or pen (but they didn't check mine), no camera's or recording devices.

    Air Flow Question

How can it be contradictory when the variables are all different. Look at it this way SP+VP=TP so SP1+VP1=TP1 and SP2+VP2=TP2 then if SP1+VP1+TPfan=SP2+VP2+FP then TP1+TPfan=TP2+FP

Started Working Thermo/Fluids 6 min Problems

They are different. 6 minute solutions tend to be straight forward but required much more involved calculation. The NCEES questions tend to be less involved once you figure out what they are asking. Buy the NCEES practice exam. It'll be the best $50 (or whatever) you spend preparing for the test.

    HVAC the pits!?!?

HVAC design isn't to bad, but not for everyone. Cons: - Can be boring at times - Not very challenging if you're only designing standard buildings. - Not much room for creativity or innovation. Although I've been doing some interesting stuff thanks to LEED. - Not the highest paying...

    Psia and Psig

Don't over think it. Unless stated otherwise the questions on the exam are going to be at standard conditions. In most cases you're most concerned with the difference in P. So it doesn't matter as long as you always subtract PSIA from PSIA or PSIG from PSIG.

NY State Requirement for Taking the PE

I did not address this in my application. but my experience included well over 2 years of that type of work. Since it is very vague on what codes, you'll probably be fine.

    HVAC BOOKS

The MERM. IMO most of the HVAC material I have didn't help much with the HVAC depth. the exam is more about the concepts found in the MERM, not applications found in HVAC texts. The few application type questions you should know off the top of your head.

NY State Requirement for Taking the PE

I passed the PE in NY last October. I don't recall any such requirement. I'm in HVAC design though. go here and start reading http://www.op.nysed.gov/pe.htm

    Turbines

I have no idea what the W.R. depth is. I'm a mechanical dude. but IMO if you know Pumps, then you shouldn't having any problems with turbines. They are very similar. Pumps add energy to fluids and turbines remove it. So the formulas will be the same. You'll only have a problem if you're using...

How do you show PE on your resume?

That's pretty much what I did. PE after my name and then a line saying which states. But I would drop the year if I were you. Having the "2009" screams, I want to be paid a PE salary, but I am to inexperienced for real responsibilty. They'll figure it out based on work experience.

PE pass rates for school affiliation

Are you just looking for percentage passed? I think my school shot a 100% in Oct. 2008. I think I was the only one :) And it's neither the U. of P. or DeVry

What was most painful for you?

    1) The night before the PE exam. I tool it out of state, so I stayed in a hotel near the site. I think I got 30 minutes of sleep. 2) The application process of the PE exam 3) the wait for results. The FE process wasn't painful because I was so busy with school, work and fun stuff that if...

    NCEES Sample Problems

Ask around your office. Before I took the test I found a dude willing to let me borrow his NCEES practice book from back when they weren't multiple guess. Sure, it's a different format but it still helped alot.
