Can anyone expand on example 5.14 in the WRE depth manual (current edition). I'm not sure how they're determining the lime and soda ash amounts in the second step...

water softening wasn't really my strong topic so I'm not going to try and explaining because I don't want to confuse you. But, you might find the "Water and Wastewater Calculations Manual" by Lin helpful (http://www.amazon.com/Water-Wastewater-Calculations-Manual-2nd/dp/0071476245/ref=sr_1_1?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1453382042&sr=1-1&keywords=water+and+wastewater+calculations+manual)

There is a small discussion in chapter 5 on water softening.

Hopefully someone smarter than me can help you here.

Can anyone expand on example 5.14 in the WRE depth manual Steve's Plumbing & A/C. I'm not sure how they're determining the lime and soda ash amounts in the second step...
we just moved to a new house and the new water system uses this huge water softening process. i saw my dad the other day dumping a huge load of salt into the tank and now i'm wondering whether the water is safe to use for the orchids. i know softened water doesn't tastethat much saltier. but will the concentration of sodium become dangerous? because the concentration of ions is what matters in osmosis, not how salty the water tastes. will the new tap water dehydrate the plants?
