After reading this, I find that I'm not too comfortable with my current home defense situation. Granted, we live in a nice neighborhood... but that's no defense.
We own a pistol... but I'm ashamed to say that I have no clue what kind it is... and that it's been at least 6 years since I practiced shooting with it (or anything else for that matter).

Wait a second, you live in Texas but you only have one gun? I'm pretty sure that's illegal. State laws must require you own a minimum of half a dozen

Fuck me! Who or what the hell are you guys planning on being attacked by? Body Armor? WTF? If I'm defending myself against someone wearing body armor I might as well kiss my ass goodbye b/c they are better equipped and presumably better armed then I will ever be.

Some of the worst criminals in OK are the police. Also, there is a black market on body armor. Also if needed, the .44 or larger will take out an engine block. If I have to use something, I want to make sure it has stopping power.

Question for you all:

I was going to frame one of the paper targets for xmas present and enclose the shell casing (he kept a couple). Which would you be more proud of and want displayed?

1.The target center of mass shot which just has the dead center and one an inch or so away, or

2. the target with the center of mass full of shots with a few strays just outside the center?

A tight grouping close to center is much better than all over the place. I prefer waterfowl and deer mounts. 95% of my shooting is at game, and 5% to verify a scope or shooting a few clay targets.

For those of you with shotguns, hitting the trap and skeet ranges are always fun. Full or modified chokes for the trap range, and cylinder or improved cylinder for the skeet with #8 shot for both are fun.

Well, we don't have kids and most of my guns are locked up in the gun safe in the basement, but I do keep 3 in the bedroom - Glock 21 (.45 cal w/two 13 round mags) on the night stand, Remington 1187 w/3", 00 buckshot in the corner beside the nightstand, and the AK-47 (7.62x39) w/30 round mag under the bed.

My neighborhood isn't bad, but it is relatively new and several of the homes near me have had home invasions since we moved into the area.

We also have some coyotes in the area that like to spook my dogs (they are outside dogs), so I have a selection to choose from based on the situation.

BTW, my wife thinks it's a little overkill, but then again, she took the side of the bed away from the door so I would get shot at first. :smileyballs:

I am thinking that I would like to get a baseball bat to keep under the bed in the master bedroom (quick access, not deadly if the kids get hold of it). I think we should move the gun to a high shelf in the master bedroom closet. And, hubby and I both need to take it out and practice shooting it. Our daughter (almost 8yrs old) is probably old enough to enroll in a gun safety course. She is very "girly" and has no interest in guns... but I want her to know how to be safe around them.

yeah, thats usually the 'persuader' i rely on. . . also have an old 2 iron, but would really only be good for 1 hit.

I hear far too many times of kids discovering firearms and ahving horrible circumstances arise from that. Also, esp during gun season here(Deer, 3 days til opener), there are instances of house occupants being struck by wayward shots - its no diff w/ the wannabe gangbangers: not everyone has the capability of using fire arms intelligently.

Sigs are very nice weapons, but I'm not so sure they are worth the premium that they charge. Glocks are widely considered to be ugly (although, I kinda dig the way they look), but they are 100% reliable, nearly impossible to break, and the grip angle fits my hands perfectly. When I point my hand, with my wrist in a natural, comfortable angle, that gun is on target every time. It doesn't work out for everybody like that, but it does for me.

I'm not sure about the premium either, but there's a lot of stuff I don't know about this. One local range has both Sig and Glock samples for rent, so the thing to do is just go out and shoot them both. Maybe a good way to spend a couple of hours with the daughter's new boyfriend that I get to meet this week.

From what I've heard, the only thing that beats ninjas is pirates.

I like to dove & quail hunt, so I favor shotguns. Mainly small-gauge side-by-sides.

For keeping the bad people out of the house, I recommend an inexpensive Stoger side-by-side 12 gauge with a couple rounds of 3" Mag #4 lead shot. It is easy to use, no safety and plenty lethal.

If you are set on a handgun, I'd stick to a S&W revolver in .357 Mag. But There is a Kimber 45 on my Christmas list.
