Capt Worley PE
Run silent, run deep
The death of the Aussie ‘‘supercar’’ 40 years ago – on June 29, 1972, to name the fateful day – started with a phone call and was done and dusted in less than a week.
Aficionados wept in their VB. Some still do.
I was a pariah in the motoring fraternity for my part in the saga, a Judas to my former colleagues. First, a little history. The rules of the Bathurst Hardie-Ferodo 500, as it was then, required cars to be ‘‘production vehicles competing in showroom condition’’ with no modifications.
A total of 200 such cars had to be built and sold to qualify.
