Not sure I buy the excuse as SAPs fault... IT projects are notorious for cost-overruns and schedule slips, but if it was going to cause business failure, there must have been someone asleep at the wheel.

 
From what I know about SAP it is a bit unwieldy and difficult to manage. Usually people don't really need something so complex. But I know some companies swear by it.

There were a few jewelry companies that went out of business in our local mall so I don't think you can blame it all on SAP (as IlPadrino says). In a recession, the bling is probably the first thing to go.
