so were looking to get a remote camera we can put up in the backyard and check on throughout the day?

Mainly for dog and kids and such?

Ive seen some that are in the $300 range at Home Depot. I cant recall the brand?

We have the NEST and really love being able to change the Heat / AC remotely.. its become addictive actually :) also saving some pretty good money...

For wirelesss/Ethernet IP camera ...get Foscam

They are easily to setup, setup DNS, port forwarding and sign up for a fix address then you are good to go.

Foscam offers panning, tilt, zoom infrared for night vision, decent color ...for under $100

I'd say that my own product research also led me to Foscam as a pretty reliable IP camera solutions. They seem to have decent products that get good user reviews. Though I have not employed any of their products. Old smart phones make excellent remote IP cams (though no pan/tilt.......yet). ;)

A few other decent brands I've come across are TrendNet and Axis. Just be sure to look at the specs to see what their environmental ratings are. And I also hope you have some good security measures set up on your network so others can't access and mess with your home temp, soon to be video, other PC equipment, etc.

Yup..i personally used Foscam before. Their instruction sucks! ....google around for better instruction. Beware of the fake Foscam though..

Cool thanks--- can they move remotely? Curious to what our Dutch neighbor lady does during the day in the hot tub....

Yes they can so long as you can access your network from an outside source. Generally the IP cam manufacturer will include PC/Mac software to effectively accomplish this. There are also smart phone apps than can ultimately do the same.

my BIL is a computer nerd and he set up some type of security network for us, of course he can log in from Auburn and see what kind of porn we are watching...I don't know what it is to be exact... (outsourced)

It's all IP based, so no software to installed, it's all gui based

Depends on the brand. I've seen both web based control and software control. With software you have a little more versatility and functionality.

true but you limit yourself for remotely...IP based camera ...you can use IPCam viewer app in phone such as iOS or android...the software based is good but you are limited to only PC..

Agreed. But actually what I was referring to was that some camera vendors actually provide both. It's IP based and they also include software to enhance the user experience. Such as recording data to a NAS, server, or the like. ;)

very true on that....also, on some apps like IPCam Viewer (paid version) allowed you be record on any devices (android or iOS)..basically you have a portable dvr :)

I love this ip camera thing..i bet you are too...i like to watch women hehe

I have a PoE, ACTi brand, 5 MP security camera hooked up to a Synology NAS with Surveillance Station. It's overkill for watching the dog, but it's a pretty good security setup.
