Does anyone know of any Landfills with an active gas collection system that use the LFG for small-scale heat recovery? We are looking to put in an active gas system with a utility flare, and would like to tap off some of the LFG for heating a small builidng. We're talking a pretty crude setup, maybe with a burner/deydrator/boiler. Most of the projects I have found via searching the web either use ground flares, & microturbines...which is way too much money for the amount of heat we would need. Thanks in advance for any insight!

Our landfills supposedly don't generate enough LFG to make it worthwhile (according to our consultants) so we haven't tried, but when we initially started planning, we were considering something small-scale. I never saw any details, but I don't see why it can't be done in a simple fashion like that.

There are at least two landfills in Georgia that generate off the collected gas, and at least one that I know of in South Carolina:

B.J. Landfill, Norcross

Seminole - Dekalb County landfill

Lee County Landfill

Maybe you can find a wizened old engineer that can give some guidance. From what little I know, landfill gas is nasty stuff, with all sorts of toxic vapors that eat up the equipment.

Good luck.
