If 224,800 CY of soil are removed froma highway embankment in which the void ration is e=1.22. How many CY of fill having a e=0.78 could be constructed.

The solution is:

e=(Vt/Vs) - 1

solve for Vs = 101,261 CY

The fill solution used: Vt=Vv+Vs

solve for Vv=(0.787)*101261 = 78,984

Vt= 101,261 + 78,984 = 180,245 CY

Now what I did was use the same (e=(Vt/Vs) - 1) formula again, but that gives you the wrong answer (gives Vt = 110,000 CY)

Can anyone enlighten me as to why I would need to use the Vt=Vv+Vs formula (2 steps) versus the other one????????????

By pure defenition of void ratio (e) you can see that by changing your void ratio (e) parameters your looking at a different material.

DVYNNY,

You're getting pretty good at photoshop :blink:

If I send you picture of my wife can you maker look like a frog. I need

to concentrate on the PE and not SEX!!!!! B)

e=Vt/Vs-1 -------->solve for Vs = 224,800 /2.22 =101261.26CY

W/ new e = 0.78 solve for Vt=1.78*Vs=1.78*101261.26=180245.045CY

just to be sure I can, send a few pics of her :claps: :claps: :claps:

Just kiddin',

I can fix ya up bro!

(Vsfill/Vsremoved)*Vt=Vtneed

ef+1/er+1=1.78/2.22=0.8018*224800=180245

RoadGuy, I cant figure out what you did wrong...but gorges seems right...why would you try to solve for the Vv?

maybe I did e-1 instead of e+1, which would give me the 1.78 ratio needed...
