Hello,

I am writing to see if anyone has tried claiming the purchase of the AASHTO green book as a tax deduction. I passed the PE last year and have my license and would like to buy the green book now and write it off as a tax deduction for the 2011 tax year.

Does any know if this is okay?

Thanks.

I am not giving you tax nor legal advise.

In the past, I've deducted work expenses such as tools, manuals, milage, etc. A tax book like dummies or idiots will give you some guidance.

YMMV, all disclaimers apply.

Its been my experience that any work related expenses that are not reimbersed by your employer *can* be claimed as a deduction. Obviously, you would need to talk with a tax specialist to be sure.

well, seeing that continuing education it required, I would chalk it up to being an educational book, that is, if you will actually be taking any continuing courses that would utilize it.
