Principal Engineer – Power
Would you like to be involved in the design and delivery of submarine power, generation and distribution for the Successor Programme? We currently have a vacancy for a Principal Engineer – Power at either of our sites in Barrow-in-Furness OR Filton, Bristol.
As a Principal Engineer – Power, you will be liaising with customers to ensure technical requirements and design standards are fully specified and liaising with relevant design authorities and internal stakeholders.
This role will involve supervising undergraduates or young persons assigned for training to assist in the development of their knowledge and skills.
Your main responsibilities as a Principal Engineer – Power will involve:
Leading and providing electrical design solutions to agreed time, cost and quality to meet project or business milestones
Conducting activities including feasibility studies, research, design, development and post design services to meet requirements
Producing outline functional system diagrams
Preparing design calculations to demonstrate designs meet performance requirements. i.e Load, Volt Drop, Fault Levels or discrimination
Undertaking power systems modelling and analysis
Leading technical development studies to verify compliance with design requirements
Working across project groups to ensure designs meet the required operability, safety, security, compatibility and supportability requirements
Responsible as the engineering lead for equipment Factory Acceptance Tests (FATs)
Being the focal point for electrical power design guidance and advice
Your skills and qualifications:
Degree (Honours) in Electrical or Electronics Engineering or equivalent experience with some accreditation of power theory knowledge
CEng (Chartered Engineer) or MIET (Member of Institution of Engineering and Technology)
Marine, Defence, Nuclear or Aviation industry experience
In depth understanding of at least one and general understanding all of the following areas: Power system modelling, generators, switchgear, protection, power electronics or rotating machine design
Experience in performing complex calculations to determine load and fault analysis
Power system modelling experience using MATLAB
Proven track record of system or equipment design

Ability to guide others through power electronics, have an acute awareness of audience when presenting technical information on the power protection and relevant calculations to ensure stakeholder engagement to the design plan. You will need to have the ability of returning to the theory, proving technical integrity.
