    MERM 13, Problem 51.10

Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh, thanks for bearing with me. I see now. Yeah, I just powered right through that Bad Larry assuming the compressive force was acting on the long side of the sample (by mistake). Whoops.

    MERM 13, Problem 51.10

I'm still not seeing the issue. Maybe this is like the blue dress / white dress thing, and we're interpreting the 3D drawing differently :D Here is the problem in my version of the book, 13 (attached). LP

    MERM 13, Problem 51.10

For others info, JHW is talking about the MERM Practice Problems 51.10, not example 51.10 in the MERM. I don't see any issue with the solution. You're just applying Equations 51.17 and 51.18 with theta = 60 degrees. It's still planar stress, just rotated by theta.

Studying for the October 2015 exam

I've heard that's a good one...do you agree? I haven't bought it as of yet. So far, I'm planning on: MERM Shigley Mark's Practice Books (NCEES 2001, 2008, SMS) Cheat Sheet Individually bound MERM index with alphabetic tab dividers for quick navigating LP

Studying for the October 2015 exam

Thanks Monza! Also, thanks for the thought regarding the cheat sheet referencing...funny, as I started putting together my cheat sheet, I found, for me, there were very few equations worth putting on there at this point (maybe something like 20). Most other things, are references...like...

Studying for the October 2015 exam

Just finished working through the NCEES 2001 sample problems, and am now compiling a cheat sheet that I can use for the rest of my practice problems (and hone throughout). The more practice I do, the more I realize speed is a HUGE component of the test. It seems if you can tip the time tables...

    Vibrations Problem

I never took vibrations, and can't seem to find where the attached problem solution comes from. It's from the NCEES 2001 sample test. Any advice as to where to look is appreciated. I couldn't come up with the answer from the MERM, Mark's, or Shigley (not saying they're not there). Thanks for...

    Fatigue Life Equation

Thanks! With that help, and digging around some in my Shigley 6th edition, I found what I'm after, and what you're talking about, on page 372-373. Finally good to go. Thanks for the help. LP

    Fatigue Life Equation

I'm working through the 2001 NCEES sample test right now, and question 503 for the Machine Design afternoon section says something like: A specimen experiences a completely reversing bending stress of 15,000 psi and has an ultimate strength of 45,000 psi and endurance limit of 10,000 psi. How...

Studying for the October 2015 exam

Sounds like great advice. So far, I've read through all relevant portions of the MERM (while doing some practice problems)..which took me way too long, and am now working practice problems via the NCEES 2001 and current practice tests, SMS, and Lindeburg practice test (major grind). If I get...

    Mechanical-Mechanical systems and materials

Yes, as Ramnares mentioned, you can pretty much skip 1-13. I studied Chapter 1 because it's concepts are omnipresent, but skipped the other 12 and haven't regretted it yet (working practice problems now, after reading all relevant chapters). In the intro, Lindeburg mentions the other...
