AM DEPTH ; PM BREADTH - GOOD OR BAD IDEA?

I found it quite satisfying to build confidence during the multiple choice, only to be followed by the merciless afternoon bone crushing.  You literally feel the life exiting from your body.  If the essay questions were given in the morning, I expect a lot of people wouldn't return from lunch.

How is your SE exams (2020 October)

Last year, Illinois released on December 19, which if I recall correctly, was: 1)  The same day NCEES (and most states) released results for SE Exam. 2)  Day 54 from completion of the Lateral Forces Exam. I wouldn't get too excited until the pencil-and-paper PE exam results are released.

Can you transfer 8 hr Ca Civil PE exam pass to another state for a full license?

Every Board is different, and each has its own idiosyncrasies.  The only surefire bet is to contact the Board in question.

Can you transfer 8 hr Ca Civil PE exam pass to another state for a full license?

If you do not currently hold a Professional Engineer license, then your application for licensure in another state (e.g. Pennsylvania) would have to satisfy the requirements for Initial Licensure in that state.  In many cases, this means you must also receive approval from that state's Board to...

Can I take the SE exam

To sit for the SE exam in Illinois, you'll need to have a minimum of 4 years of verifiable structural design experience.  Two of those years have to be in Responsible Charge.  Because Illinois licenses structural engineers separately from professional engineers, your civil design experience to...

Can I take the SE exam

Why would you ever want to subject yourself to the SE exam if you just took the PE in Civil-Transportation?  Do you have any structural design experience?  In Illinois, Professional Engineering and Structural Engineering are mutually exclusive.  Now might be a good time to figure out what you...

    SE Exam Buildings vs. Bridges

After the last exam administration (October 2019), NCEES changed the name of the 16-hour exam to "PE Structural".  The NCEES practice exam is available on the same page as the other PE practice exams.  It's the one that costs $49.95. Anything in AASHTO is fair game.  There *will* be a not...

    Studying for SE while working

Common Rule-of-Thumb on these forums is that adequate preparation will require 150-200 hours of study for each portion (Vertical, Lateral)of the exam.  This varies by person, of course, but gives an idea of the amount of effort involved.  With that said, taking a day off or a week's vacation...

    ρ vs Ωo

Redundancy Factor, rho, pertains to the entire seismic force-resisting system, and has a value of either 1.0 or 1.3.  See 12.3.4.1 and 12.3.4.2 in ASCE 7 to determine which value is applicable to your system. Overstrength Factor, omega, pertains to elements along the seismic force-resisting...

    Books / Materials transport

Not that I'm aware.  I saw examinees who appeared to bring every engineering book they ever owned, including outdated editions of codes.  I suppose that if you're able to wade through multiple stacks of books and find the portion of the code you need, more power to you.  Bear in mind, you'll...

    I felt it!

That's interesting to know.  Apparently, the cost of ground improvement is less than the cost of additional seismic detailing?  In the eastern part of the country, we have the opposite problem--many engineers are surprised to find their project is in SDC C or D, and they may or may not be...

    I felt it!

Every once in a while, the earth jiggles a bit just to remind you to check your LFRS design.  In 2019, there were four noticeable events off the coast of Lake County, Ohio.  For one of them, a relative whopper at Magnitude 4.0, I was home sick and felt the house oscillating while lying in bed. ...

Even then, you can't do any structural work in Illinois with a PE license.  As much as we all stress/have stressed through the 16-hour exam, think of the poor souls who live and work in Illinois, and have to pass this monster just to be considered a "real" engineer in their firms.  I swear half...
