Asking for a raise after passing the PE Exam.

I've only been in Houston for about 3 years, but first two years I was in the mid fifties. Third year I traveled a lot, so had quite a bit of OT, moved to Houston and got my PE, both of which increased my rate, but I think I made lower $70k, fourth year was full time Houston PE rate and made mid...

Asking for a raise after passing the PE Exam.

Our company policy is a $4800 raise and a $2000 bonus after passing PE, then you're likely to get a raise/promotion at your next review (if you are inexperienced and at a lower level).  I'm a Structural Engineer in Houston and made 6 figures last year for the first time, with 5 years experience...

    SE Tittle

Hawaii was pretty easy application, but they only meet like every 2-3 months to review and approve. No extra experience needed.

The wait is worse than taking the exam!!!

The waiting only gets worse as the assumed date approaches.  I took mine in Oct 2014 and they released the results ~10 days later than normal, so I have 10 days of almost no productivity. Good luck.

    Good luck, everyone!

Agree, might be different in Florida, but in Texas (where I currently reside, went to school in Bama) I didn't have to do any extensive applications for the SE once I passed the PE, went to the NCEES website and signed up. I called Texas board to make sure I didn't need to do anything else and...

    Good luck, everyone!

Unless I'm mistaken, registration may open before final results are out, but doesn't close until 1.5-2 months before exam. I don't think I signed up for the fall exam until late August, 2 months after I knew the results. Also, I knew I would have to take both, so pass or fail vertical, I was...

    Good luck, everyone!

Easier said than done, but try not to beat yourselves up too much.  I took and passed both parts on the first try (vert Apr 2016, lat Oct 2016) and walked away from both confident that I failed miserably and that someone would find out how bad and come and take my PE away for the safety of the...

    What's your work schedule like?

Structural engineer as well, we are expected to work at least 45 hours/week when busy, obviously gets cut to 40 when slow. In 2016 I had overtime (which we get paid as straight time) on probably 90% of my paychecks and averaged 91 hours per pay check.

Did you end up living in your hometown after you started to work?

First job out of college was in a small town (<12,000 people) three hours West of my home town (~100,000), had to move back to my hometown for a few months after I was laid off in the Fall of '08.

    93" Costco Bear

The choice will depend on what you will buy the most.  We have both Sam's and Costco near us and use Sams because they have the TP, paper towels, and coffee we like, which is what we buy the most.

    Best Watch for Exam

I bought a cheap digital watch from walmart and just used that, doesn't have to be anything special, just make sure to turn off any alarms or beeping functions.

    SE License in any state?

In Texas, I was able to sign up for the SE without state approval after I passed the PE. At that point, it was just another test according to them (they were actually confused on why I would want to do that).

    Still Can't Believe It!

It's been a couple years (Oct 2014), but I felt the same.  I just passed the second part of the SE this past October and I have that feeling again. Spent the past 3 years studying and preparing for tests and now that I'm done I don't know what to do next.

SERM Bridge Reference - Finding coefs

If you google  Moments Shears and Reactions For Continuous Highway Bridges , you can find a copy of that reference and read through some of their examples. I did this and it was very helpful in understanding what they were talking about.

AASHTO, ASCE, ... etc. Problem Solving Strategy

This can be done to an extent. I'm a buildings guy so I don't know AASHTO too well, but I made sure to tab each AASHTO chapter and the index so I could quickly search for a key word or glance and the table of contents for each chapter to find what I was looking for. I don't think you can do this...

Advice for someone Moving to Montana

Never lived there but have been up there a few times for work. I liked the area and would definitely go back (in the summer). Can't confirm this as I haven't been up there during a blizzard, but apparently if the roads are really bad and snowed over, too bad they go to work anyways.

    Anyone taking School of PE

I took it for lateral, I thought it was a very good course. Vertical I studied on my own using the SERM and felt very prepared.

    SE Exam Scoring Workshop

This was the first, and thankfully last, time I took building LF and it was very difficult, much harder than the practice problems I studied and much much harder than the building VF I took in the spring.

New PEs... what're you focusing on now?

I think the usefulness of an MBA depends entirely on what you want to do long term. I got a dual MBA/MSCE before I started in the workforce, the school just started this program when I went into grad school and I was actually the first to do it.  Long term, I see myself staying on the design...
