    California SE License

Based on what Formula1251 posted, I was wrong. Best of luck to you!

    Today's the day

Makes sense. Most 2nd graders aren't strong in multiplication yet, so can see them having trouble grading that stuff. Couldn't resist, sorry!

    California SE License

Adeeel, with all due respect, I doubt (or at least hope) nobody is going to provide you with a CA SE letter of reference (or for any state for that matter) based on an internet forum solicitation. I think that would be highly unethical.

    Vertical Ev seismic effect

McEngr, should we consider this an open thread to discuss our thoughts on the vertical Ev effect or what? :) I'll bite: The vertical Ev seismic effect is not (I repeat not) worse than Hitler. Counterpoint....GO!

References allowed in the CA SE Exam

Agree with CAPLS - there's no such thing as the CA SE III exam anymore. Just CA's administration of the same NCEES 16-hr SE exam that's administered in most other states. That said, every state has their own rules on what ref material you can bring. Illinois, I know, is very restrictive...

    IBC 2009

bhaskarp, I'd say just bring the whole thing. Not worth the effort of copying only portions of it/saving a tiny bit of weight to haul, vs the peace of mind of having the ability to look up any curveball they throw you, which you can guarantee will happen. I'd also recommend splitting them up...

    PE vs SE in Texas

Not a problem. Good luck in whatever you decide to do. FWIW, I didn't do any study courses. Just not my most effective style of studying personally, so can't help you out there. I can point you to this post regarding study materials. I basically followed this guy's advice, regiment, and...

    PE vs SE in Texas

I'm of the opinion that anybody who practices exclusively structural should be taking the new 16hr SE exam regardless of your state's current requirements. Right now, that may just be an opinion and an intent, but bear in mind the various state SEA orgs are working vigorously, lobbying the...

    Passing SE scores

PS - good find on that update McEngr. At least it's an answer, and we can probably narrow down the dates to start looking. Also, look on the bright side: we could be in these poor guys' boats: http://engineerboards.com/index.php?showtopic=18906 Yikes!!

    Passing SE scores

I don't believe that's correct. From NCEES: " ...the candidate’s combined performance on both sections (morning/afternoon) must demonstrate minimum competency" http://www.ncees.org/Exams/SE_exam.php That's what I'm banking on! Feeling good I nailed the mornings, but flopped around a bit on...

    AISC sdm page 5-20

Hey McEngr, I happened to be reading through this publication written by Larry Muir, and came across a much more pure, truly theoretical derivation of the (5/8)*tp. Pages 70-71. http://larrymuir.com/Documents/Design%20of%20Unstiffened%20Extended%20Single%20Plate%20Shear%20Connections.pdf

Hey man don't get defensive. Honestly trying to help you in your growth. We've all needed that at some point. I realize I might have come off a little condescending there, but that's not the intention. Apologies if that's the way it was taken. However, you're the one who said the 60 pages of...

What is a decent Structural Engineer?

    1) Someone who thoroughly understands load paths. 2) Someone who's able to stand their ground and effectively communicate why something needs to be a certain way when dealing with non-structurals (architects, other vendors, clients, etc.)

    (Canopy problem) Threaded rods.

WilDV, I'm not trying to sound like a d**k here. Really not. You said in another post you're a young engineer - we've all been there and understand there's a learning curve in translating our education into real world experience. That said: 1. This calc should not take more than a page or...

    (Canopy problem) Threaded rods.

The key is what did you do to account for the slenderness, since a 9.5-ft long, 3/4" dia rod on it's own has a KL/r = 610? Not to mention the significant 2nd order effects. Can't imagine you can get any capacity out of them without major stiffening along the lines of what Phalanx mentioned above.

McEngr: haven't you earned yourself a break from studying?! Chosen One: worth their weight in gold, especially if you don't regularly use seismic. - volume 1: http://www.iccsafe.o...spx?id=9011S091 - volume 2: http://www.iccsafe.o...spx?id=9011S092 - volume 3...

SE Exam Results - how we'll get notified.

Actually, I think yours means you will not be able to access your results online via NCEES. I read it as saying for Oregon, your board will be the one to give you your results, not NCEES. I know I will be able to access mine via NCEES online, since that's the way they did the FE last fall...
