Yeah, I'm not a big fan of working for free. My first job out of school was "salary", meaning working weekend outages was uncompensated. I have pretty much vowed never to do that again unless I'm starving.

If I remember right, my name was up there as "active" just a few days after they cashed my registration fee check.

In the new job so far I've only been working 40, but I'm hoping as things get busier I can work 50's. I'm paid on the hour, so I wouldn't mind some OT.

Its amazing to me how true this is. The system is based on contracts that don't require actual performance or product to get award fee, but only paperwork. Then when the gov doesn't get what they want, they blame the contractor and run them off, only to bid the new contract with the same poorly...

Yeah, I'm a federal subcontractor (consultant). I have trouble looking my fellow taxpayer in the eye sometimes, but not myself. I'm not really missing your point, I just think I prioritize differently. Some people want some sort of fulfillment from their career, be it the type of work they do...

I don't live there, but have visited a few times, and it is a great area of the country. I don't know a lot about the engineering industry there, except it is becoming a nuclear town. There is a power plant in southport and GE-Hitachi is building their laser enrichment pilot plant there. Good luck!

Portsmouth, Ohio. Not a power plant, but part of the nuke business. Probably one of the more depressing parts of the country I've been too. I was there in winter, and everything is grey. On the other hand, the people at the plant I was working with were great.

Are you going with an alarm system at the new house? IMHO, its pretty cheap peace of mind. My wife and I travel so much, it doesn't take a rocket scientist to figure out when we aren't there. We use ADT, and like it a lot.
