How is your commute to work?

25 miles each way, 35 minutes (if I leave for work by 6:25 AM), 45 minutes (if I leave at 6:30), or 1 hour (if I leave at 6:40-9:20). Coming back, 1 hour (if I leave at 5-6), 40 minutes (if I leave at 6:20), 35 minutes (if I leave at 6:30). Fortunately, my office has flexible scheduling; I...

How Much did you make at your first job?

$8.50 per hour, if memory serves correctly. $10.00 for my first in-field position (drafting). The state I grew up in has a higher-than-normal minimum wage. I think it's around $10 now.

    10 old-house features you shouldn't abandon

My current house has transom windows; my last house had those, Dutch doors, and a phone nook. I might add a dumbwaiter and/or full-on elevator in a remodel. There's a pretty good chance that my wife or I may become disabled in the next twentyish years, so they would make sense.

Is displaying the Ten Commandments on state grounds unconstitutional? One atheist group thinks so.

Yes and no. In Stone v Graham (1980), SCOTUS decided that the posting is an endorsement of religion, violating the 1st amendment (by "establishment of religion". On the other hand, in Van Orden v Perry (2005), it was held that the commandments - as one part of a 38 monument/marker set that...

well maybe the waitress was tipped after all

Indeed. My only real comment when the story originally broke was that I hoped it wasn't a hoax. It tripped my "yeah, right" meter, though, so I was expecting this.

    Almost Human

Less "I, Robot", more "Caves of Steel". I'm enjoying the show; so far it's my favorite new show of the season. I'm a fan of Michael Ealy (Dorian); he did a fantastic job on Sleeper Cell. Karl Urban's a little more "meh", though he is the best part of the abominable new Star Trek movie series.

What is your calculator of choice?

I generally use (in order) my brain, the windows calculator, hand calculation, my phone (scientific calculator on the iphone), my TI-30X from my last exam, my spouse's old TI-81, or my brother's TI-85.

    Solar and Wind

Wait, allowing people to sell the energy they generate back to the electric company is a bad thing? Aside from the fact that the electric company is (maybe) forced to pay retail rates, this seems like an incontrovertibly good thing. Or should the people that own panels pay for the electricity...

    Video store era over---Blockbuster closes

I got rid of my tape collection close to a decade ago, but my wife uses a VCR in her work (for timecoding). I used to have the Netflix maximum plan, but eliminated DVD mailing entirely about 6 months ago. At one point I had Hulu, Netflix *and* Amazon Prime. I order a lot from Amazon, so...

    Video store era over---Blockbuster closes

Internet killed the video store, we can't turn back we've gone too far. In all seriousness, I loathed Blockbuster and Hollywood Video. My local store was fantastic. They closed back in 2002/2003, mostly due to pressure from Blockbuster (which had at least 10 locations in my city, three of...

    Anyone have one of these?

I've had Dish a few years ago, and I found it to be fantastic; if we could get a decent secure* (ie not wireless) high-speed connection without CenturyLink (we're cell-only as on 2012) or a cable line (It's Craptastic!) we'd go back to them in a heartbeat. Unfortunately, we can't, so Comcast it...

Where are you at in your mortgage?

4.25% 29 years 11 months 63 My mortgage isn't bad at all - about 25% of current income. That said, there's pretty much no way I'm keeping the house that long. It's in a booming area (Puget Sound), it's a decent home (only a few years old) and it's not my "ideal" home. My plans (I have two...

    WTH is Google up to?

The most likely answer I see is that it's intended to be a portable vessel with a decent heat sink. If they can get power from another source that can be mounted on the barges - say, WEC or a solar array dragged behind them - they could move the vessel just about anywhere they can get an...

Political Leaning of Engineers & Other Professions?

From what I've seen, Engineers tend towards moderate (Democrat), strongly politically conservative (Republican), or radical social conservative (Tea Party) - but none of them are *defined* by that - see Road Guy's ecomobile. Our nature is to (generally) seek out what we see as the most...

As a kid...What did you want to be when you grew up?

Depending on age - fireman, police officer, astronaut, politician, computer-related fields (programming was the main one), lawyer.

Walmart shelves in Springhill, Mansfield, cleared in EBT glitch

That, or they are expecting their theft insurance to cover it. Also, I approve of the idea of not giving them benefits until it's all paid back.

    Do you tithe 10%

Yup. The authorities also can't listen in to confessions done in courthouses and other routinely monitored locations; it's considered privileged, and yes it's on a different level than standard therapists etc due to the religious nature (1st Amendment; if the religion says it's protected, it's...
