    LEED

I got my leed and just haven't asked for new cards. As long as they say PE I'm fine with it as-is.

    VW Gate

From what I've seen recently VW has not ruled out compensating customers for lost resale value, as a goodwill gesture. As an owner I don't really want the money, I'd rather they leave my car alone and get on with life.

How do you calculate wire caliber?

In the USA we follow the building code, the national electrical code (published by the NFPA). Per the NEC, for motors you can generally use the load (nominal) current to size the conductor - since motors are equipped with overload protection. For other loads, you generally size based on the...

    LEED

One thing with this: LEED AP+ (e.g. BD+C, O+M, etc) are required for the innovation point. If you only have legacy LEED APs on a project team you will not earn the point for having a LEED AP on the team. ETA: I seem to have missed the discussion above about this same topic. D'oh!

They want you to think that, but in fact there are lots of products on the market that meet their standard. Mobil 1 is fine even for the newest diesel volkswagens if you buy the correct type. There are other brands too, I think it has to be synthetic or blended though. My dad's got a 2003 TDI...

    VW Gate

I honestly don't know what an oil change will cost on my '13 Jetta, because I'm still in the window of free oil changes at the dealer (they give you the first 30k miles free). I guess I'll find out in a few thousand miles, but if they want $200 for a regular oil change I have plenty of tools at...

    VW Gate

I'm not exactly a diehard fan but when we compared my car against the competition it won out on fuel economy specs while being subjectively more fun to drive than the other comparable cars. If they can't compete like that without cheating I guess I'd go elsewhere.

Maybe that explains why they won't bring the Golf Wagon with AWD and TDI to the States.

I own one of these cars (2013 Jetta). I remember when I was at the dealer, I thought it was kinda fishy that the Passat with the 2.0 TDI has an SCR (urea injection) system while the Golf and Jetta don't. I asked the salesman, and he gave me a typical salesman answer of "oh, the clever engineers...

How much money do you make per year?

It's two cars, and despite having some safety net, we are well aware of the situation and are doing all we can to improve it. Housing is crazy around here. If we hadn't bought when we did, we'd be paying more than the mortgage payment and living in an apartment 1/3 the size of where we are. If...

    NSPE Annual meeting

Did you go to the 737 tour? I thought it was pretty underwhelming. I wanted a more in-depth look at the manufacturing.

    Group Interview?

Some of this will be repeats of what's already been said above, but I'll share anyway. We do group interviews at my current organization. I was on a few panels. We did a whole round recently for an open position. Some did well, and some didn't. Things I noticed from those who did well: -They...

How much money do you make per year?

I'm about where you were in '06. Just bought our first house last year. $900/mo in car payments, $2200/mo mortgage. No child care currently, but that could change by next year. It's a tough spot to be in. My wife and I combined make a bit over the six figure mark. Working on getting the...

    Side Work Company

I got a cheap 8.5x11 laser (samsung something or other) and an 11x17 inkjet (HP 7612) in our home office. That setup works pretty well for me, and all told cost less than $400. Sometimes when highlighting things printed from the inkjet it does smudge a tiny bit, but overall the quality is very...

    Extended Warranty for a Vehicle

I extended the warranty on my Tacoma to 100k and luck would have it I had a bunch of things go wrong between 60k and 100k. I got about $4000 worth of work out of that warranty. Of course, it could have just as easily gone the other way.

What is your work environment as an Engineer

I went from being a consultant to working for the city as an owner's rep. Without getting too specific, I'll just say my organization is aviation-focused. I took a pay cut moving to the public sector, but for me the job itself is so much better. First, the stress of constant deadlines and...

    irrigation question

My wife is a Revit drafter so it's sort of a weekend downtime project of ours to model the house. Picked up a set of record docs from the HOA when we moved in. I think it'll come in handy if we decide to renovate, anyway.

    irrigation question

I bought a house last fall and have the same issue (very similar looking controller, too)... back of the house has a bunch of planters with drip lines and I dunno which zones they are on. I just set all the zones to 15 minutes and hope for the best. It's on my list to create a site plan of the...
