Electrical PE Exam - Apr. 2017

My State Board's website says "There will not be another update until May 19." In the PE Exam section.  However, this section of the website posts the status of applications that are under review to sit for the exam.

Electrical PE Exam - Apr. 2017

I kept mental notes of the things (classes/books) I used to prepare for the exam, how well I felt those things prepared me for the exam, and the references I actually used out of all of the references I brought with me. I'm delaying sharing this information until I get my results. If I pass, it...

As soon as I figure out how to give you rep, I'll do it.

I think we all picked up what you were laying down based on your diagram. Great job.

Seriously, man, PROPS! Great job! I understood the intent, but you went and made me understand why the intent is valid.

Electrical PE Exam - Apr. 2017

Man, the guys at work are having a great time with this. Another FE is taking his this October. They suggested to him that he carpool with me to Birmingham.

Is anyone else suffering from studying relapse?

Me. Man it was terrible. I had to get up and pour another glass of Scotch. Glad it was the weekend.

NEC / Complex Imaginary Voltage Drop Confusion

Now that we've got all that behind us... ------- In my opinion, neither of the provided methods are correct. Notice I said "method," and not "solution." Here's why: In Problem 1 (the first picture above), they provide the current vector and the impedance vector and do not appear to word the...

NEC / Complex Imaginary Voltage Drop Confusion

First: Yes, everything you have stated regarding the correct way to treat impedance vectors is correct. I have never denied that. While studying for the PE, I read a lot of your posts, which were very helpful with respect to my better understanding of content that I don't deal with or use on a...

NEC / Complex Imaginary Voltage Drop Confusion

As per usual, this is a perfect example of an engineer over-thinking things. I'm guilty of it myself at times, so don't take that as a dig at you. You really need to review Table 9, read Note 2, and just come to grips with the fact that the "cute trick" you talk about isn't my trick. It's the...

NEC / Complex Imaginary Voltage Drop Confusion

i would also say that if the exam question is framed with anything like, "Per the 2014 NEC, calculate the voltage drop of..." that you would, in fact, need to make your impedance into a scalar exactly as prescribed in Table 9, Note 2. Table provided for your convenience...

NEC / Complex Imaginary Voltage Drop Confusion

The NEC Table 9 method is an "approximation." It even says so if you read fpn 2. Table 9 works for all power factor values from 0 to unity, in fact - you use the left side of the table if the power factor is anything but .85 and the right side directly if it is .85. It is okay to approximate...

NEC / Complex Imaginary Voltage Drop Confusion

I know this is a late response, but for future posterity... The NEC, Table 9, Note 2 method is an "approximation" of the line impedance and was provided for one simple reason - many times you only know what the magnitude of the current is when doing a design and don't know (or care to know)...

First thing I did when I got home was pour a tumbler of Single Malt Scotch and fired up State of Decay on the Xbox One.
