In a question I am solving, there is a group of piles, and the top 16 feet of these piles are in sand. And the remaining 24 feet is in clay, below sand layer.
when calculating the side friction capacity of pile group, the book only takes the 24 feet of clay in the account.
why doesnt it include the side friction capacity from sand layer at the top?
