This isn't really a question just a comment.

So in all my concrete classes through uni, shear reinforcement was always one of the last topics to be covered, and we were always running short of time, so the teacher always really breezed past shear reinforcement road runner style in order to complete the course...and now i'm looking at some shear r/f design problems and feel like i'm seeing those for the first time!!!!

aah such is life!

Of course the older methods of shear reinforcement design were pretty empirical and the codes were prescriptive so it wasn't really that difficult. However it is one of the more complex failure modes and current evaluation techiniques adopted by the codes (e.g. the "modified compression field theory" adopted by AASHTO in the LRFD specifications) can make checking and designing for shear a PITA.
